Today marks the official start of the 2026-27 bushfire season in the ACT.

We know that bushfire season can be a stressful time in Canberra, but our crews have been hard at work throughout the year to ensure we’re well prepared for the summer ahead.

This season is currently forecast to have a normal bushfire risk. However, bushfires are still dangerous under a normal seasonal outlook, and conditions can worsen quickly. Make sure you’re prepared when you head into the bush. 🚶🚵🎣🚙⛺

The ACT Emergency Services Agency publishes the daily Fire Danger Ratings throughout the bushfire season, and Total Fire Bans may be declared when conditions become dangerous. 🛑

⚠️ Please avoid entering parks, reserves or plantations during times of high fire danger. On Total Fire Ban days, check current conditions and any park, reserve or road closures before you head out. If you are already in the bush and conditions deteriorate, leave early if it is safe to do so.

You don’t need to travel far for an epic school holiday adventure. 👪 Why not try one of these family friendly bushwalks? 🚶

🏞️ Rendezvous Creek (Namadgi National Park): This 3 km (1.5 hour) loop packs in gurgling mountain streams, sweeping valley vistas, giant boulders, gorgeous forest and so much more.

🖤 Congwarra Track (Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve): Named after a Ngunnawal warrior, this 3.1 km (1 hour) loop follows the Tidbinbilla River through gorgeous grassland and forest, the Nature Discovery Playground and four picturesque picnic areas.

🏡 Orroral Heritage (Namadgi National Park): Explore Orroral Homestead, the former Orroral Tracking Station and more as you follow the Orroral River on this 6 km (2.5 hours) one way walk. Car shuffling is recommended if you’re walking the full route.

🦆 Sanctuary Loop (Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve): Step inside the predator proof fence for a 2.1 km (30 minutes) wildlife-spotting wander. As you wind your way along boardwalks, past artworks and lookouts, keep your eyes peeled for bandicoots, potoroos, Brush-tailed Rock-wallabies and Rippa – our resident Musk Duck.

These walks are in remote areas, so make sure you’re prepared. ⚠️ Bring plenty of food and water, sun protection and a map, and always let someone know where you’re going (and when you’ll be back). And make sure to drop into the Namadgi and Tidbinbilla Visitor Centres if you have any questions. 👋

Canberra’s other big flower show has bloomed: it’s wildflower season! 🌼

🎨 Our parks are currently awash with spring colour: from urban floral focal points like Aranda Bushland and Wanniassa Hills, to High Country highlights like Mount Franklin and Honeysuckle. ⛰️

Best of all, different plants bloom at different times, so every adventure brings something new. 😍

Here are some of our wildflower photos – and we’d love to see yours! 📷 Share them in the comments below. 👇 by @actparks

This bench at Farrer Ridge is so much more than meets the eye. 😍

Before the old, rickety bench was removed for safety reasons, we asked the community for feedback on its use. 💬 What we heard back was heartwarming. 💗

We learned how the old bench was a favourite for sunsets and stargazing, eating lunch, sipping tea, or quietly reflecting in stressful times. It supported tired walkers, nature watchers and parents supervising their kids. As one respondent said: ‘I associate some amazing times with that bench.’ 😊

👷 Knowing how much the bench meant, our team replaced it with a brand new, sturdy seat – where Canberrans can rest, watch over the Bullen Range and Brindabellas, and make new memories long into the future. 🌄 by @actparks

Staying in shape is hard work – even for McQuoids Hill Nature Reserve. 😅 So, we’ve given it some extra support. 💪

New stabilisation works will help to keep soil on the hill where it belongs, rather than washing away after rain. 🌧️

We’ve installed jute mesh, coir logs and bundles of bursaria shrubs to slow rainwater runoff and help water seep back into the ground.

These materials are all biodegradable and will help native plants to re-establish on the bare hillsides. 🌱

That’s great news for local wildlife, including threatened species like Little Eagles 🦅 and Pink-tailed Worm-lizards; 🪱 and for water quality downstream in the Murrumbidgee River. 🏞️

👀 We’ll monitor the site monthly and after major rainfall events to ensure it stays on the path to recovery.

McQuoids Hill Nature Reserve can be easily accessed from Kambah Pool Road. by @actparks

Explore off the beaten track in the Australian Alps, all without leaving the Namadgi Visitor Centre in this epic new exhibition. 🖼️

‘Backcountry Adventures’ brings together the jaw-dropping photos of Andrew Deacon: a Canberra-based photographer, 📷 backcountry skier ⛷️ and doctor at the Canberra Hospital. 👨‍⚕️

💬 ‘For me, there is nothing more special than being in wild places, with wild weather,’ says Andrew.

His photos celebrate the extremes in the scale and seasons of the alps ⛰️ while also looking ‘closely at the small details, the colours in the leaves, the curves of the tree branches, how a stunted snow gum struggles in the wind.’

You can experience this FREE exhibition until 31 October at the Namadgi Visitor Centre. Opening hours are
🕘 9.00am to 4.00 pm Monday to Friday
🕘 9.00am to 4:30 pm Saturday, Sunday and public holidays.

🐦 A little birdy tells us it’s R U OK? Day – and these Bush Stone Curlews know that gentle bushwalk is a great way to check in with family and friends. 🚶

Natural settings have been shown to lower stress and anxiety, and to improve our moods. 😊 They’re also peaceful places to disconnect from everyday life, or reconnect with some we care for.

We could tell you why Gibraltar Peak is among our very best bushwalks – but the pictures really say it all. 📷

🚶This 8.2 km return (3-4 hours) trek at Tidbinbilla Nature Reserve is no leisurely walk in the park. You’ll gain around 320 metres in altitude between the trailhead at Dalsetta and the iconic summit lookout. 😅

But there’s plenty to stop and see on the way: from info signs to towering boulders, valley vistas, gorgeous grass trees, wildlife galore and much more. If you’re looking to start your spring on a high, Gibraltar Peak is waiting! 😍

Please be mindful that Gibraltar Peak is a highly significant cultural site for the Ngunnawal Traditional Custodians. ❤️💛🖤 This is a Ngunnawal men's initiation area, a place 'where boys become men'. The Elders ask that you respectfully visit this place by staying on the marked walking track, taking only memories and leaving only footprints. 👣 by @actparks
