When you watch a great performance, you’re not watching someone talk.
You’re watching someone listen — and be changed.

In life, active listening says:
“You matter.”
“I’m not just waiting for my turn.”
“I’m willing to be changed.”

Most people don’t listen. They reload.

But when you truly listen?
Relationships deepen.
Conflict softens.
Influence grows.
Leadership strengthens.

There’s real power in being present. by @actwithjamil

Being a multi-hyphenate artist isn’t about doing everything. It’s about refusing to be defined by just one thing.

Actor. Director. Photographer. Educator.

Each discipline feeds the other. Acting makes me a better director. Directing makes me a more thoughtful actor. Photography teaches me to see differently. Teaching reminds me that there’s always something new to learn.

For years, artists were encouraged to pick a lane and stay in it. But creativity doesn’t always work that way.

You can have multiple passions without being unfocused. You can pursue different disciplines without being any less committed to your craft.

Don’t let someone else’s definition of success limit the ways you choose to create.

5 Books Every Actor Should Read

1. The Like Switch — Jack Schafer & Marvin Karlins
Learn to read body language, build trust, and understand people beyond their words.

2. Grit — Angela Duckworth
A reminder that persistence and consistency matter as much as talent.

3. The Power of Intention — Wayne Dyer
Focus on purpose and mindset instead of external approval.

4. The Four Agreements — Don Miguel Ruiz
Don’t take rejection or feedback personally. Stay open to growth.

5. The Art of Gathering — Priya Parker
Learn how to create meaningful, collaborative spaces.

Study the craft, but study life too. Understanding people and the world will deepen your artistry.

What non-acting book has made you a better artist?

30 years in the performing arts industry. And if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that this journey is a marathon, not a sprint.

Success looks different to me these days. Every opportunity I get to create, to tell a story, to step into a rehearsal room, to work with artists who challenge and inspire me, THAT is success.

I’ve learned that treating people the way they want to be treated matters. That kindness and respect will take you places talent alone never will.

I’ve learned that I don’t have to be the smartest person in the room. I don’t need all the answers. But I do need to stay curious, ask questions, and be willing to learn. Sometimes the greatest lessons come from people with far less experience than I have.

Collaboration is EVERYTHING. Nobody creates anything meaningful alone.

I’ve learned to keep coming back to my WHY. Especially when the work gets hard, the phone doesn’t ring, the opportunities don’t come, or I start questioning where I am on this journey.

And perhaps the biggest lesson? There will ALWAYS be another mountain to climb. Another goal. Another challenge. Another version of myself I’m still becoming.

That little boy in the picture had no idea where this life would take him. I’m grateful he kept dreaming.

30 years later, I’m still learning. Still growing. Still creating. Still climbing.

And I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Happy B’earthday to me. Here’s to the journey, not just the destination. Birthday tribute graphic featuring two portraits of Jamil A.C. Mangan, celebrating his journey from childhood to adulthood. On the left, a black-and-white childhood photo shows a young Jamil smiling and playfully posing in suspenders, a tie, and dress pants. On the right, an adult Jamil sits confidently in a blue button-down shirt, smiling warmly at the camera. A subtle navy-and-gold brushstroke separates the images. Elegant gold and white lettering reads “Happy B’earthday, Jamil A.C. Mangan.” The design reflects growth, gratitude, and 30 years of creativity in the performing arts. by @actwithjamil

Actors, go beyond Google.

Here are 5 research resources every working actor should know and actually use:

1. IMDbPro
Research casting directors, agents, managers, production companies, credits, upcoming projects, and professional connections. It’s especially useful for seeing who has worked with whom and finding industry contact information.
http://pro.imdb.com

2. AboutTheArtists
A great resource for digging into theatre. Search actors, directors, designers, productions, theatres, and past creative teams—especially when researching regional theatre.
http://www.abouttheartists.com

3. IBDB / IOBDB
Use these when researching Broadway and Off-Broadway. Look up productions, performers, directors, designers, theatres, and creative teams. IBDB is the official Broadway database maintained by The Broadway League.
http://www.ibdb.com
http://www.iobdb.com

4. Playbill
Stay current on Broadway and theatre news, casting announcements, upcoming productions, creative teams, and who’s working where.
http://www.playbill.com

5. Backstage Call Sheet
Research casting directors, talent agencies, managers, production companies, and other industry professionals. Backstage describes Call Sheet as its entertainment-industry contact directory, with information that can help you target the right people rather than submitting blindly.
http://www.backstage.com/resources

Don’t just use the internet to find auditions. Use it to understand the industry you’re trying to build a career in.

Research the project. Research the people. Know who’s in the room.

AN AUDELCO AWARD NOMINATION FOR BEST REVIVAL!

Thrilled to share that our production of The Mountaintop at Mile Square Theatre in Hoboken, NJ, has received an AUDELCO Award nomination for Best Revival!

Written by the brilliant Katori Hall, this play has always held a special place in my heart. Having portrayed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. onstage myself, stepping into the director’s chair gave me an entirely different opportunity to explore the man behind the icon. His humanity, humor, vulnerability, and the weight of knowing that tomorrow is never promised.

A huge congratulations to our incredible cast, Hassiem Muhammad (Dr. King) and Kendra Holloway (Camae), along with Petra Hinds, our Camae understudy. Thank you for your trust, courage, and willingness to dig into the work.

Creative & Production Team
Scenic Design: Matthew J. Fick
Lighting Design: Colleen Doherty
Costume Design: Allison Esannason
Sound Design: Carter “Roc” Mangan
Projection Design: Michi Zaya
Wig Design, Hair & Wardrobe Supervisor: Julyzza Santiago

I’m equally grateful to our designers, stage management, crew, and everyone at Mile Square Theatre who helped bring this production to life.

Directing is never a solo endeavor. The work belongs to everyone who helped build it, question it, challenge it, and ultimately share it with an audience.

Thank you to AUDELCO for recognizing our work and continuing to celebrate the contributions of Black theatre artists.

Congratulations to the entire Mountaintop family!
