There’s a kind of permanence you associate with your parents. You look at your mom or dad, and you think they’ll always be there. It’s not that you don’t know they’ll die someday, it’s just that nothing truly prepares you for when it happens.

For me, that moment came on the first Sunday of 2024, when I received the news that my father had passed away. My life changed forever in an instant, and here I am, one year later, still trying to understand how to live in a world without him.

Today is January 7, 2025, but it feels like I’m still stuck in January 7, 2024. I thought, maybe, after a year, I’d start to come to terms with it. But I haven’t. The truth is, I don’t think I ever will. Everything reminds me of my dad. The air feels different; life feels different.

Over the past year, I’ve tried to write something for him—a eulogy, a tribute—but the words never come. The hardest part is having to talk about him in the past tense. I still catch myself saying, “Oh, my dad likes this” or “He’s always like that.” The idea that he’s gone forever is something my heart cannot accept.

Someone once described grief as carrying a needle in your pocket. You never know when it’ll prick you, but when it does, the pain feels just as sharp as the first time. That’s how I feel.

A year has passed, but the pain hasn’t dulled. I thought time would help, but it hasn’t. I miss my father every single day. I’m learning now that grief isn’t something you get over, it’s something you carry.

October

I initially didn't intend to reflect on October because it seemed uneventful, but upon reviewing my phone, I realized that several significant events occurred last month. Sometimes, hindsight provides a clearer perspective. In retrospect, October turned out to be a great month for me. I experienced lots of laughter and had more good days than bad ones. I'm grateful for the life I have and the people in my life. I am incredibly loved.
