One of the last 108th Training Division coins to be passed out before the element that formerly produced ALL US Army Reserve Drill Sergeants was deactivated.

First NAGA Tournament Recap

We competed on the mats next to each other at the same time having just met earlier in the week during prep for the tournament.

Great competitor and looking forward to more rounds in the future with you 💪🏾

@25lukejoleary doing big things at his first competition, ever!

First no-gi match - whips out a clean ass triangle for the win.

The next two matches were against some high skill opponents and he did outstanding!

Moved on to go with very little rest and took home the 🥇!

Great competitor who will do some awesome things in the near future.

She was about it too. Didn't even sneak me a belt. 😤

@camkingbjj shows up for every one of his students and this one was no exception. Last minute adjustments are cool, but PRESENCE is often more important.

Speaking of, I've competed quite a bit since I've started training at @graciefighterph around a year ago... And I have NOT had a match that Cam wasn't in my corner.

Well earned!

I joked that I may or may not seek some no-gi training before this comp and just by way of things working out the way they did, I was able to drop in with Coach @arnal.anthony10p of @10thplanetoakley and get a class in.

The environment and training is on point and I left that night feeling good (and tired).

I appreciate you and the team welcoming me, passing feedback, tips, and generally embodying a great culture.

💡 Our responses to our circumstances are our choice and responsibility

💡 Constant pursuit of purpose reveals & fulfills our life's meaning

💡 Connection to others is incredibly powerful and necessary for surviving and thriving

I started/finished these two books while in the hospital last week and couldn't believe how relevant they were to me in that moment, despite their subject matter and time settings.

Both works cover markedly different subjects and circumstances, but the themes I pulled during my own taste of hardship were welcomed as I contemplated the last six-month chapter of my life and career.

All of which culminated in me laying in a bed that wasn't mine, a body that just betrayed me, and a disappointing end to a crusade that pulled nearly every ounce of networking capital I ammased over the course of my 19-year Army career.

Coincidentally, these books reinforced that:

How I respond is on me ✅

I have been pursuing a desired outcome for a long time, and the pursuit isn't over ✅

People who supported me, still support me - and without them, this story ends completely differently ✅

Had a great time at @buffaloblackbjj in Stockton this morning!

Thanks for the invite to no-gi open mat @jovkage.bjj

The rolls were abundant and the players were welcoming - can't ask for more than that on a Sunday.

Last week's US Army Drill Sergeant Hall of Fame induction had me reflecting deeply on my time on the trail.

I've said it before and I'll stand on this: I wasn't the "best" drill sergeant... But I wasn't just doing things to do things, either.

I was picking up lessons.

Many of which I shared with my candidates, the Senior/Drill Sergeants I've mentored, and any one else who is in the chute to wear the hat and badge.

Quick video – Long journey…

I wanted to be a Drill Sergeant since my Drill Sergeant challenged me to be better back in 2007.

18 years later, I'm being inducted into the DS Hall of Fame. All from my time as a Reserve Component Drill Sergeant.
