Airy

Airy is a research project that explores the use of air as a primary resource. Air is almost invisible, free and very available material, it can be used to create rigid structures and has protective properties when stored in a thin fabric. It uses inflatable structures to protect valuable devices during travel. The design employs contemporary materials and considers detailing to offer relevant, everyday solutions for safeguarding increasingly fragile and valuable electronic devices.

Talle Chair

Inspired by the simplicity of chalet chairs and rural wooden aesthetics, the Talle chair reinterprets a timeless archetype for an urban environment, blending tradition with modern living. Its layout invites playful interactions – whether sitting, leaning, resting, or having a conversation. The Talle chair is a lightweight and easy-to-move companion, seamlessly adapting to dynamic spaces.

Unified - Heat Pump Concept for @viessmann

Unified is a scalable and adaptable system for Viessmann heat pumps, built using anodised extruded aluminium profiles. The design enables the creation of various sizes and configurations of heat pumps with just two extrusion dies—one straight and one with a rounded corner. Inspired by the lenticular lens effect, the profile shape conceals internal components whilst allowing for efficient airflow.

“Heat pumps are energy-efficient household climate systems essential for transitioning to renewable energy and combating climate change. Typically installed outside close-by to buildings, they are becoming common visual elements in urban landscapes, often resembling air conditioners with limited design variety across brands. To reimagine these essential typologies, Viessmann, a world leading Heat Pump producer, invited MA Product Design students from ECAL to develop innovative concepts, resulting in designs that challenge norms and explore new visual identities of heat pumps.”

L/T Stool

Lightweight alternative to traditional solid wood seating. L/T is made primarily from cellulose-based materials and is largely composed of air. Thin wooden ribs form a sturdy core structure - similar to airplane wings, which is enclosed in cardboard laminated with a wood veneer. The stool can be disassembled and flat-packed, making it easy to transport for shipping or moving.

Airy Backpack

Airy is a lightweight, water resistant, packable backpack made from upcycled paraglides. Designed for hiking, travel, and daily activities, Airy addresses a common issue found in packable backpacks: a lack of structure. It incorporates inflatable reinforcements that use air to provide structure. Design ensures the backpack remains rigid and comfortable while still being ultralight and highly compact when not in use.

Developed at @ecal_ch as a self initiated project guided by Kim Colin @industrialfacility and @maxwell_ashford , very thankful for your support!

“Displaced - design for humanitarian aid”
ECAL Memoir - Research Master Thesis by @adam__friedrich

Displacement is a growing global crisis, affecting over 120 million people worldwide. While humanitarian aid usually focuses on supporting organisations and policies, everyday objects that shape the lives of displaced people often go unnoticed. What items are supplied, organised, purchased, designed or made from scratch to provide relief and support in the extreme reality of displacement? While humanitarian agencies only procure necessary survival objects, how can long-term needs be met?

The role of the designers in the context of crisis is significant but requires sensitivity and awareness. The widespread saviour complex often results in solutions prioritising visibility over real impact. Instead, aid efforts must move toward collaboration and co-creation, acknowledging refugees as active participants rather than passive recipients.

By embracing co-creation, learning from grassroots initiatives, and shifting toward a more thoughtful and participatory model, humanitarian design – if understood correctly – can encourage meaningful and effective solutions.

Designed in CH, Made in JP is a collaborative project between ECAL Master Product Design, Karimoku New Standard, and Presence Switzerland.

From 13 April to 13 October 2025, representatives from countries across the globe will gather to showcase innovation, culture, and sustainability at the World Expo in Osaka, Japan. For Switzerland’s pavilion, MA Product Design students at ECAL were tasked with designing a stackable wooden chair to be produced in Japan by Karimoku New Standard, intended to furnish the lightweight, bubble-inspired architecture by Manuel Herz.

We proposed Talle.
