Today I competed in the @ibjjf American Nationals!I was able to stick to my game plan and won all 3 of my matches to win gold! 🥇I honestly am a little lost for words right now. I haven’t been performing to my best the last few tournaments and today I was able to out it all together. Thank you @ainsleyrobinson93 for working with me and helping me make sure my game plan today was sound. Thank you to @jamesan905 @bull_sleeman @nate.fan.bjj and @lucasbarnesbjj for the coaching and support today. Thank you to all my teammates at @torontotopteam @actionreactionmma and @wabisabi_bjj I truly feel grateful for having such amazing people around me helping me get better. Today was a good day! I was able to secure 3rd place at @ibjjf No Gi Worlds. I was losing my first match and was able to turn it around and win the match with 30 seconds left. In my semi finals match I once again had to fight from behind as I was down 10-0 and down multiple advantages but didn’t stop fighting. Once I was able to get my opponent off my back I took his back and almost finished him with a rear naked choke. I ended the match in mount. Unfortunately the score was 10-4 as there wasn’t enough time to score again. I always want to win gold but those who know what I have been dealing with over the past few weeks know that I am happy even making the podium. And this is how you take yourself out of competition for the rest of the summer in under 7 seconds. Back story:I use to race Loyal all the time, if you know me as a coach you know I don’t ever let kids beat me. This isn’t out of ego but I think it’s valuable for the kids to learn that with hard work they can win without someone going easy on them. Earlier this year Loyal beat me for the first time. I was waiting until my back finally felt good enough to race him again before we raced again. On Thursday we raced again. First race was very close which I think I won by a nose. I was feeling good and we raced again. I was pulling away but unfortunately this happened. I pulled my groin so bad that it might have given me a small hernia. Haven’t been to the doctor yet to confirm but based on what I see and feel it’s probably the situation I am in. Those who know me also know I don’t go to the doctor unless I drastically need to so for now it’s bed rest, ice for swelling and heat to relax the muscle with a side of Advil for the pain if it gets too bad. Also he was running in crocks. 🫣 that boy is fast! To say I am disappointed is an understatement. I was just starting to feel good again on the mat as I have been out most of the year with back issues.
