#dognamedcat hasn’t been on Instagram lately, but she’s coming out of retirement to help me shamelessly promote. I put a new band together of Nicole Mitchell + Anna Webber on flutes, John Dierker on bass clarinet, and Scott Clark + Pippin Barnett (aka Scotty Pippin) on drums/percussion, and it might go without saying that I’m ridiculously excited about it. We play a concert in Richmond at Reveler tomorrow night, Monday August 17 @ 7pm (ticket link in bio), and then record the next day, which will be the first album of my music since Crickets in 2018. If you live in Richmond we’d love to see you! Either way I’m excited to share this music with you soon, and can’t thank this band enough for all the effort they are putting in to make it happen.

Big thanks to @downbeat_mag + @burningambulance for the label spotlight on Out Of Your Head Records in the June issue! We are very honored, and appreciate the kind words. “Is it weird that so much of the most forward-looking jazz being made in Brooklyn is being released on a label based in Richmond VA? Perhaps, but it’s undeniably the case.”

During the lock-downiest times of covid my good friend TJ Huff and I wrote some silly songs and traded Logic tracks back and forth for fun, under the name Sinking Skiff. We decided to release a few of them as an EP called W-I-N-N-E-R-S and the first track, BUILD THE BONES is ready to see the world. Super A+ music video by the best to do it CraigOne, and mixed by magician in many ways Kit Karlson. TJ wrote the music, I wrote the words. We hope you enjoy it! It’s only 1 minute and 17 seconds, so if you don’t enjoy it just know that it will be over soon.

Link in bio for video, Bandcamp, and most places you might want to stream music.

Whoops, forgot these were in the oven so they got a tiny bit darker than usual. Happy for cold weather, which is the best time to bake! 60/40 whole wheat to bread flour, somewhere around 70% hydration. Kept it easy, for the first one back in a while (it’s grilled cheese night over here). OK, bread!

Hey Richmond! I’ve been going to @plan9music since I was just a young boy at JMU in the (very) early 2000s. Very excited to be doing a night of Out Of Your Head Records there this Wednesday August 28 in Richmond. We’ll be doing an in-store performance with two short sets by my band Crickets, and a joint band led by Laura Ann Singh and Scott Clark. Showtime is 7pm sharp! We’ll also have records, CDs, t-shirts, hoodies, stickers, maybe a signed poster or two, fridge magnets (!?) and any other OOYH merch I can find in my garage for sale. This super sweet poster was designed by @exhumist . Oh, and this show is FREE...can’t beat that!

7:00pm Laura Ann Singh + Scott Clark w/ John Lilley, Bob Miller, and Adam Hopkins

First attempt at olive loaves, with lemon zest and rosemary. Haven’t cut it yet, but I’m gonna say more olives right off the bat. We’ll see! 50/50 whole wheat + bread flour, kept hydration way down at 70% (and less salt) because I figured olives are wet. Could have definitely pushed it. Ok, bread!

Super excited about this album that came out on OOYH Untamed today! Back in May @amcgrawrva put a low key recording session together with @penicandrarini @sclarkrva and me. This is the result! Happy to have this music out in the world, and if you’re in Richmond come hear something like it but different Monday night (11/13) @artspace_richmond. Link to the album in my bio. And woo wooo look at that 🔥 design by @exhumist!

From @outofyourheadrecords

OOYH Untamed is back!! We're super excited to release Swarasa featuring Peni Candra Rini, Adam Hopkins, Scott Clark, and Andy McGraw OUT TODAY (link in bio)! We didn't do a pre-order for this one, just wanted to get it out there quickly. Peni was in Richmond for the semester and right before she left in May 2023 Andy suggested Adam and Scott come and improvise a little bit. He rolled tape, and it was awesome. It was also the day after Peni had a root canal, and she sang the most incredible stuff (especially considering she had to be in pain still!) We're having a release party for this on Monday 11/13 at @artspace_richmond as part of the OOYH Records 5th Anniversary Party. Free download cards of the album with the price of admission. Another post on that soon!

As always, the awesome art/design for Untamed is by @exhumist, and we're scheming a t-shirt with all these animals on it soon. It'll be our own little OOYH Untamed zoo. Also heads up that we have another surprise Untamed album coming out next Friday 11/17. You won't want to miss that one!

All album sales for OOYH Untamed go to the artist and the albums are digital-only (and only on Bandcamp). Swarasa was recorded by Andy McGraw in the University of Richmond Gamelan studio, and mixed by our dude Lance Kohler at Minimum Wage Recording in Richmond. It features Peni Candra Rini (vocals), Adam Hopkins (bass), Scott Clark (drums), and Andy McGraw (percussion). Link to listen and order in our bio. We hope you enjoy it as much as we enjoyed making it! @penicandrarini @adamhop @sclarkrva @amcgrawrva @lance_koehler @mwrrva

Cheddar cheese sourdough, 50/50 whole wheat/bread flour. Kind of like a grilled cheese without having to make a sandwich. Bread!
