Recently a Diamond District tout went viral for saying “real photographers shoot film,” and now even accounts like @nycphotocommunity are platforming him. That’s disappointing because he is known among many of us for heckling and bullying photographers on the street. This person doesn’t embody “photo community.” He poisons it. What the fuck are we doing, as a community, if we are elevating people like this? If we aren’t calling this type of toxic bullshit out? Back in October 2022 he repeatedly targeted me, calling my camera “a piece of shit” and saying “real photographers shoot large format.” I laughed it off at first (who shoots candid street on 4x5?!) and I even tried to befriend him. But interaction after interaction, he was just so hostile and adversarial towards me. Eventually, fatigued by his constant bullshit, I asked him to please leave me alone. He kept berating me every time I saw him. After multiple attempts to de-escalate, I finally told him to just fuck off. He then followed me down the street swiping at me, making physical contact. Up until THAT moment I hadn’t made a single photo of him. I flagged a police officer. He lied and claimed I tried to hit him with my camera. Police reviewed nearby CCTV and saw he was the aggressor. He was issued a warning for harassment and making a false statement. A few weeks later he approached me again and made more vague threats about how I better be careful. I walked away but if I’m honest, it did leave me feeling slightly anxious. I mostly avoid Diamond District now. Jeering at photographers about the medium and format they use is cringe and pompous but bullying and physical intimidation is unacceptable. Anyone else met this guy? What was your interaction like?
