Sometimes the interruption is the opportunity.

The flat tire was real. The inconvenience was real. But so was the blessing waiting in the middle of it.

The next time something doesn’t go according to plan, pause and ask, “What might God be doing here?” 🤍

I will forever be thankful for promptings. What is one prompting you heard that changed your life?

When we moved into the neighborhood, there was an older woman living in a small miner’s shack that had been moved onto the property many years before. It wasn’t much to look at, and she was embarrassed by it. You could tell she didn’t like drawing attention to where she lived. My wife, my kids, and I started spending time with her. We would stop by and visit, and before long we grew to love her. The more we got to know her, the more we realized that what she needed wasn’t sympathy. She needed friendship. As we visited with her, I kept thinking about that little house. It wasn’t that the house was terrible. It was that she had begun to believe she wasn’t worth improving it. That thought stayed with me, and eventually I decided to do something about it. I gathered a group of people from the neighborhood and organized a project. With donations, willing hands, and a small army of volunteers, we spent two days resurfacing and siding the house. By the time we were finished, it no longer looked like an old shack. It looked like a cute little cottage. The transformation was amazing, but what surprised me most wasn’t the change in the house. It was the change in her. Something happened when she realized people cared enough to spend their time serving her. Her confidence grew. She smiled more. She felt like she belonged. The little cottage became a reminder that she mattered. Looking back, the siding and paint were probably the easiest part of the project. What truly changed her life was discovering that the people around her loved her and wanted to be her friends. Sometimes we think service has to be complicated or that we need special talents or circumstances to bless another person’s life, but often the greatest gift we can give someone is helping them see their own worth.
