Magic in the thumbnail

Drew this randomly, think it was on the approach of Spring, didn’t know what to do with it, tried to recreate it in my sketchbook as it’s on a loose bit of paper and didn’t like how it was coming out, gave her a full length body and didn’t like that either so I’ve cropped it as to how I’m going to have it on canvas and I’ll be doing something a little more spontaneous with it.

For the lore, the journey…

The last few months have been, a part of me wants to say unprecedented but the themes have been similar to times throughout the past. Microcosms of macrocosms etc. Dealing with grief has been the hardest part, knowing you can’t catch everyone has been difficult to process. But then at the same time reminded that not everyone is worth catching and had to walk away from someone else just so they could be seen for who they are when theyd managed to, for a short while, convince everyone otherwise. I was always mad at my folks for never speaking up enough at times from the past and the truth is, you can’t and it just ends up being used against you. I saw these two prompts come up in my astrology and realised the crux of the hurt I’d harboured throughout most my early adult life stemmed around these two very things.
I’ve done nothing but pour myself into things which at the end of it all couldn’t seemingly give two fucks, you’re replaceable like *click* all the while you gave it your all. I could go on and on but all of this has brought me back to myself after giving it all away over and over again. The only thing I can’t run away from. These gifts I’ve been made to feel inadequate over, like they’re nothing. “It’s not work it’s just a hobby” as someone once said. Maybe it’s okay for me to pour myself into my own container for the first time in my life…
The major theme in all of this is learning how resistance forms outwardly and bounces around me internally like an echo, the thoughts which cling to the empty platitudes which drip out of peoples’ mouths and create recursion, and being able to work through this and let it all go seems apt with the image choice. The oak tannins from work had stained my finger tips. Spiritually, this physical staining is interpreted as a sign of grounding, intuition, or energetic sensitivity, while also serving as a metaphor for being “hands dirty” with mystical work.
I’m also being reminded lately of how many people I’ve freely given health advice to have got their lives back again, which is always incredibly heartwarming.

Just trying something out for the new year, the videos a little less pronounced than I thought it would be, maybe it’s just my phone? Any tips on how I make the image bigger/clearer so you can see all the textural line work better would be received gratefully. As you can see this idea originally appeared on my grid in another form, but I’ve decided to flesh him out into a bigger painting. I have a lot of ideas… for my ideas… in that, being a very visual person, I have to have it in front of me, which is weird to say I’m also steeped in my imagination but this is where my process of refinement and keeping myself hidden has been a double edged sword, like a director needing a director of photography on board to shoot the scene right kinda vibe… I just feel like working this way will ultimately save me time and allow me to be a little more certain over my ideas and design at this point on my creative journey… I’m still rawdogging in the moleskine too for the purists out there…

I haven’t done any illustration for a while (prolly around a year) so it’s been nice practice, I sketched this on a ferry ride, think all in all we’d been travelling by car and ferry for 20 hrs heh

I think we all know how long this has taken, a feeling which has consistently come up for me is either I’m really not supposed to be pursuing this or l i f e really makes you sweat for things you think you want. I’m happy I’ve achieved, while it’s not perfect, the level of inchoate abstraction around my little character; surrendering to what life has given him and shedding layers of mind in order to replenish his consciousness and not become jaded at what has continually stood before him. I just needed to get my process in order before proceeding further.

I’d sketched the flowers out a number of times and then even bought a projector with a view to start projecting my sketches straight onto canvas. Which I then decided against and sketched it fresh onto the canvas because I like to make everything take twice as long.

(I actually think it has more to do with the way the sketch composition sits on a canvas and I just wanted to make sure it sat right enough for me)

Anyway, in essence, this is how these paintings have looked from scratch…

I knowww, I know, we’ve all seen this before, as I’ve stated if you’ve been following me long enough you’ve basically seen the development of someone on his own personal journey. I don’t really know what’s looking back at me through this work, it was literally supposed to be some quick fun ideas which embodied all my past sketch book musings into some form of totality that would allow me to close a chapter within my work and myself and to continue developing my practice in different ways, it all just took a little longer then expected for differing reasons but here we are.
