My incredible wife gave birth to our third child on New Years Eve, moments before the calendar ticked over to 2026. Once again I’m in awe of these graces, the miracle and mess of life.
I was lucky to sneak a few paintings from life in the final weeks as well as the last couple of days. This big one; ‘𝘚𝘶𝘯𝘥𝘢𝘺 𝘯𝘢𝘱 𝘵𝘪𝘮𝘦, 37 𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘬𝘴’ will be in my upcoming exhibition with @sophiegannongallery

Looking forward to sharing some more details about the show in the coming weeks. by @adamoste

Last week I returned back to a creek I painted heaps in 2021. (See older works tiles 4-5 and statement from the time in tile 8) Initially I found it really hard to like these two new works, maybe it was the pressure of expectation after wanting to return to this spot for quite a while. Or maybe I just felt the works didn’t capture the grandeur of this familiar but incessantly surprising landscape. They’ve grown on me since. Glad I didn’t wipe them. by @adamoste

Grateful to be a finalist in the Mosman Art Prize alongside some of the best Australian painters.

‘Under the Cliffs’ - 2026. Oil on canvas. 137 x 102cm

A short drive West of where I live and work lies a graveyard of dumped cars. The logging route through the state forest skirts a steep embankment. Below the small cliff, a dozen or more cars lie submerged in foliage and rusted beyond recognition. This car, not yet rusted, sat starkly on its roof. Thrust onto the landscape like a child’s collage, its belly bare and its naked panels glowing white in the afternoon light, out of place among the blackened Eucalypts and Xanthorrhoea. Despite my swatting and stomping, I was bitten incessantly by march flies and bull ants as I painted, their persistent reminders that I’m no more coherent in this landscape than the upturned Mazda.

I painted this burnt out Magna amongst 3 other wrecks down the road from where I live. One of those works that just didn’t quite sit right tonally after my time on site painting plein air. It needed some further layers. Maybe too dark in the end for a getting an easy photo of the work. Although the majority of you will likely only encounter this work through an online image, I’d still always rather priorities the chromatic and tonal values being right. Wouldn’t you agree?
