Barry Adamson. The full interview is live now at the link in bio.

A few questions with @adamsonbarry: bassist and backbone of the Magazine sound, original member of Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Iggy Pop's bassist on the 1987 tour, Lynch collaborator on Lost Highway, and a solo artist and film composer whose latest score is for SCALA!!!, out on @muterecords.

His legacy is there for anyone to dive into: one of the most interesting discographies British music has produced since the dawn of post-punk, touching on many other genres, from soul and jazz to film scores and electronica.

He talks about learning bass almost overnight, the Black American music running under post-punk, four very different personalities in the early Bad Seeds, what Lynch taught him about scoring, and why a huge machine of a band was never going to fit.

Plus his three bands, three bass players and three film scores he never tires of.

Swipe for a few lines, then read the rest at thesenseofdoubt.com. Link in bio.

My sincere thanks to Barry for doing this interview.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BARRY ADAMSON 🎂
Born June 11, 1958, Moss Side, Manchester — 67 today

Born in one of Manchester’s grittiest neighbourhoods, Barry Adamson grew up to become one of the most singular figures the British underground ever produced. A teenager studying graphic design at Stockport Art College when punk exploded, he talked his way into Magazine with barely two strings on his bass — Howard Devoto heard him play an open E string and said “That’s fantastic, you’re in.”

From there: the art-punk intensity of Magazine, the gothic darkness of Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds, and then — alone, in a rented room with a cassette recorder — the masterpiece nobody saw coming. Moss Side Story (1989): a film noir soundtrack for a film that didn’t exist. The NME called it “one of the best soundtracks ever — the fact that it has no accompanying movie is a trifling irrelevance.” It opened doors to Hollywood: Oliver Stone, Danny Boyle, David Lynch.

A punk who became a composer. A Mancunian who took Moss Side to Tinseltown and never lost the smell of rain on concrete. His own description of himself remains the best: “I’m a marketing man’s nightmare.”

Happy birthday, Barry. 🖤🎬
