We lost my grandmother today. Born to Austin and Iris Grainger, Ruth, or “English Granny” as she was known to me, lived a long and vibrant 93 years. A lifelong vegetarian, ardent Labour supporter, and enthusiastic book club member, she did things her own way. In her twenties, she was a rare female figure in engineering, working on the first computer guided missile systems. In the 1950s she married her gregarious Trinidadian beau, my grandfather Eugene, and they left the United Kingdom to start a family. In the harsher light of the Caribbean sun, they soon recognized their differences, and parted ways, but maintained a lifelong friendship.

Upon her return to the UK she prioritized the education of her children, but never let her own dreams die. Beyond her computer work, she pursued adventures - traveling around the world to places like Israel and China with other women engineers; training as an actress and performing both in plays and on television (even making it to an episode of EastEnders); and tutoring on set of several Harry Potter films. I loved hearing of the things she did, it made life seem like an expansive and exciting journey.

My grandmother was very British, in the way that I am very Trinidadian. Where I fill silences with conversation, she was more reserved with her words and affection. This contrast created some distance in our relationship but she showed her care through thoughtful tokens - a house plant for my apartment, a good book during a tough period of university, or countless Amazon gift cards that helped make me the reader I am today. Like my father, and now like me, she was a skilled letter writer and I am grateful for her notes that I’ve saved over the years.

While she spoke of writing a memoir, a final product never came to fruition. A few years ago, I brought my then fiancé to visit her, and we recorded our conversation, where she recounted many vivid memories. I will return to this recording when I think of her in the years to come.

Today I feel many things. Ruth was my last living grandparent. I feel sad. I want to hold on tight to my own parents. And I feel grateful that there are parts of her that live on in me.
