I don’t usually post much about policy, but this one feels important.

Twenty-seven years ago today, Olmstead v. L.C. affirmed the right of disabled people to live in their communities rather than being unnecessarily separated from them.

As new legal challenges and policy interpretations raise questions about those protections, I find myself thinking about what community has meant in my own life.

My education.
My work.
My friendships.
My creative communities.

None of those things happened in isolation.

Disabled people belong in community.

That shouldn’t be controversial.

And it’s a principle worth protecting. by @adaptiveknitter

📣 I’m trying something new.

I’ve never been especially comfortable talking directly to the camera, but this Permission Slips series feels personal enough that I wanted to give it a try.

This week’s permission slip was inspired by a very special wedding blanket that I’m knitting for my son Joe and his fiancée, Ally. What started as a simple center out square, has slowly turned into a pretty heavy project, and my elbow has been squawking at me for the past few days.

The experience has been a good reminder that pain, fatigue, frustration, and overwhelm aren’t character flaws. They’re information.

Sometimes the most creative thing we can do is listen.

Permission slip:

If your body, brain, energy, or emotions are reacting to the way you knit… that is information worth paying attention to.

Pain.
Fatigue.
Overwhelm.
Tension.
Avoidance.

These are not moral failings or signs that you “just need to push through.”

They are your body communicating with you.

You are allowed to listen.
You are allowed to adapt.
And you are allowed to make knitting fit your body instead of forcing your body to fit knitting.
