One thing Tamika said today made me think differently about networking.

She talked about how much of cybersecurity isn’t actually technical.

It’s communication. Ego. Relationships. Difficult conversations. Knowing when to ask someone who has been there before, “How would you handle this?”

And that’s exactly what I’ve started realizing in Atlanta.

People will go to a conference and say, “I didn’t get anything out of it.”

But the value isn’t always sitting on the stage.

Sometimes it’s the person sitting next to you.

The person whose phone number you leave with.

The mentor who gives you an answer you couldn’t find online.

The founder who introduces you to someone you needed to meet.

You have to open your mouth. Be intentional. Build relationships.

Because technology may change constantly, but everything we build still moves through people. by @adaverse.tech

One conversation from today really stayed with me.

Tamika Bass, a CISO I’m fortunate to know, was talking about one of the hardest parts of governance:

Getting people to actually adopt it.

And I think that’s something we don’t talk about enough.

Governance can easily become the department everyone thinks is slowing things down.

But at its core, it’s about making sure the company can move forward without unnecessarily putting its people, data, money, or reputation at risk.

The technology is only part of the equation.

People have to understand why the rules exist; and how those rules affect the work they actually do.

That’s the kind of cybersecurity leader I want to become:

Someone who doesn’t just build controls, but helps people understand why they matter. by @adaverse.tech
