The embroidery comes first. No template, no sketch — Mame As works freestyle at the machine for hours, drawing on traditional Senegalese ornamentation without copying it. This kind of embroidery is traditionally made for the grand boubou — a three-piece formal outfit worn across West Africa. Together we placed it on the A.D.Deertz Yucca shirt.
A shirt that shows the style and the skill, the meditation behind every stitch.
A collaboration between A.D.Deertz and Def Ci Ben — Wolof for: doing it together. @def-ci-benn_style_

Neo Dakar Manifesto
“We are accident-minded doers who seek to reshape Dakar for its people and the world. We seek to use creativity as an incantatory song to transform the experience of everyday life and to revive the sense of community in urban Dakar through memory and art.
We believe in the mystique of collaboration and the potential of creativity to transform the city’s individual and nuclear projects into a more awakened, fertile and constantly reborn space.
We are working to restore the link between our urban space and its mythology and creativity.
The invisible is present.” taken in Berlin, Germany by @addeertz

Installation shots from Believing Is Seeing at the wonderful @addeertz store. Thank you Wibi for opening your space to me, hosting new and old friends, and always being a creative mentor. From giving me bales of fabric when I was just starting out, to now inviting my work on your walls, your space and friendship has always been a foundation and place for creative exploration and encouragement. I am super thankful to have you in my life!

For this exhibition I applied the aesthetics of medical imaging onto lacquered cardboard forms. The interiors are in part covered by assemblages and in part left unfinished. The collages contain pieces of 90s Vogue magazines, fashion photography prints, and handwritten notes and gift wrapping paper from my mother’s archive. The pieces speak to the blurring of reality at the intersection of what we can physically see and the things that we believe.

More images to come :) thank you to everyone that came!!

chance of 1 : ∞ - 👕✨incredible!! I just got a message from Saint Louis, Senegal.
Tandeem — tailor, designer, long-time friend, has been in Berlin to collaborate with me 3 times — he needed vintage shirts for a project. There are vendors pushing handcarts with used clothes through the old town and Tandeem checked his goods but only a few shirts . The vendor said he had just bought a whole bale of shirts — Tandem should come to the market and take a look. He sent his assistant instead.
The assistant calls: „Hey Tandeem — there’s an A.D.Deertz shirt here.“
Tandeem thinks: unlikely. Says: bring it.
It was. A shirt I made 17 years ago in Portugal — my first production there. I still remember where the fabric came from, i mae 50 pieces, a huge amount for me at the time.
How it ended up in Saint Louis, found by my friend and now is in his shop , where he put a foto of us in front of my shop — that’s beyond me.

thanks @peace_njaay for the fotos and spotting the shirt taken in Saint-Louis, Senegal by @addeertz
