After an avalanche of rain, headed up to the Bay Area last weekend at the start of #nbaallstarweekend for a great sit down with @stephencurry30 and @ayeshacurry during their foundation @eatlearnplay’s Day of Service. Warrior greats Iggy and Shaun middy Livingston also showed up to put the finishing touches on the renovation of an elementary school in East Oakland. Even got a chance to ask Steph what comes next in philanthropy and beyond once he hangs it all up and he stops dropping bombs from 35 feet. In my debut for @rollingstone , I wrote about the cultural impact of my favorite game of all time, GTA San Andreas, which turned 20 this weekend. Released on Oct 26 2004, the masterpiece game recreated early 90s Los Angeles with incredible detail from the smoggy red orange skies and g-funk music to the LA riots. To remember the game I spoke to @rockstargames legend @obbeverm along with some the great voices of the game including Young Maylay aka CJ, Faizon Love aka Sweet, MC Eiht aka Ryder and Shawn Fonteno, who went on to be the voice of the next generation of Grove Street as Franklin Clinton in GTAV. Back with @spinmag again, this time with an oral history for the 30th anniversary of Coolio’s “Gangsta’s Paradise,” released Aug 1, 1995 on his sophomore album by the same name. I spoke with producer Doug Rasheed about flipping that Stevie Wonder sample, singer L.V. who I put up there with Nate Dogg (he tells me they were friends) and Coolio’s team — who shared stories about The Grammys, Gucci Fanny packs, and everything in between about a rapper who was taken far too early. Want to feel old? Bay Area classic “I Got 5 On It” turned 30 years old over the long weekend. The single appeared on Oakland rap duo Luniz’s debut album Operation Stackola, released on July 4, 1995. In my debut for the @guardian @guardian_us , digital today and in print tomorrow, I take a trip back to the ‘90s again, this time for the 30th anniversary of Biggie’s “Juicy,” released in Aug 1994. For this story, I really wanted to tease out how important ‘80s funk group Mtume @mtumemusic ,creators of “Juicy Fruit” are for hip-hop, sampled by everyone from Big, Lil Kim and Kurupt to Faith Evans, GoldLink and Saweetie. For the second time in a few months, more with the great @warreng , this time for Grammy.com @recordingacademy , unpacking the ways “Regulate: The G Funk Era,” released 30 years ago on June 7, 1994, changed the west coast hip-hop game forever, including solidifying the g-funk sound and providing a platform for Nate Dogg to become the go to hookman in all of rap. Been sitting on this one for a while. For @spinmag, I got to chop it up with my favorite rapper of all time @warreng about the making of the greatest hip hop movie soundtrack of all time, Above the Rim OST. 30 years ago in March 1994, the project unleashed Warren G and Nate Dogg’s g-funk classic “Regulate” to the world. But the OST had plenty of other legendary 90s west coast hip hop and new jack R&B acts. Honored I got to connect with so many people I’ve been a fan of for years including Above the Rim screenwriter @bmcharlemworld, @2ndiinonecpt, @producer_allstar, @nanci.fletcher, @tonygreen731gmail.com_ , and @treydpg .
