Watch till the end. ❤️‍🩹

Hair is more than just hair, we should learn to treat our hairs well and not try to fit in just to please people.

I came across this sound by @nancyumeh_ , and I really appreciate her for taking the time to speak on a topic like this. Conversations like these matter, especially when it comes to the way we treat and talk about our natural hair.

Thank you for speaking on this. ❤️

Please watch till the end, and let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Sometimes the pressure doesn’t stop when you leave school.
It follows you into the workplace, into interviews, into the idea of what it means to “look professional.”

This piece looks at that quiet pressure, the kind that makes you question whether your natural hair belongs in certain rooms.

This time, I brought myself into the conversation.
I became the subject this time
A conversation about hair, identity, and what professionalism is supposed to look like.
Where does personal identity end, and professional expectation begin?

I HATE MY HAIR II
PERHAPS I WAS TAUGHT TO HATE IT

Particularly with this work, I ran into a similar issue. The model told me that her family wasn’t comfortable with the way I had expressed her hair, and she didn’t want her hair portrayed that way either.

Honestly, this painting almost didn’t make it out here. But I couldn’t let it go. I had to find a way to do something about it, and eventually, I decided to make the change myself.

I don’t know if it’s a coincidence that I’m experiencing this while working on this body of work, but it made the question feel even more real to me.

How did we start hating our hair?

How did something that is naturally ours become something we are taught to be ashamed of, restrict, hide, or even fear?

Maybe that’s what I’m trying to understand through these works.

But what exactly makes hair professional?

Why does straight hair, a low cut, or a neatly styled wig so easily fit into the idea of professionalism, while locs, afros, braids, or thick natural hair can make people question whether someone is presentable?

This piece is about that pressure, the quiet decision between looking like yourself and looking acceptable.
Why should I have to change my hair to be taken seriously?

Maybe the problem was never our hair.

On My Own Terms IV: A Different Goal

This work is for those whose passion were questioned before it was understood.
For the dream that refused to leave.....
Some dreams never get the chance to grow because they were planted in rooms where nobody believed they could bloom.
We inherit more than traditions and expectations. Sometimes we inherit fear, fear disguised as advice, protection, and practicality.

This work reflects on the tension between passion and certainty, between the life chosen for us and the life we imagine for ourselves.

Part of my ongoing series, On My Own Terms.

Oil on canvas.

At some point I wished someone could just jump on this and help me finish this piece, I was excited to start and the process was interesting but other things came up so I left it for a bit and then the vibe wasn't there anymore i just knew I've to finish what I started and I'm really glad I did.....

I HATE MY HAIR.
Perhaps I was thought to hate it.

Every painting begins with an act of courage. Before the colors, before the brushstrokes, there is the blank canvas, a silent space filled with uncertainty and curiosity. In this work, the figure sits before that silence. Her head appears both on her body and on the canvas, blurring the line between artist and artwork. the artist doesn’t just paint on the canvas, they pour themselves into it. is an act of vulnerability, and every finished painting begins with the COURAGE TO BEGIN, courage to do.

Shouldn’t it be on my own terms?
Doesn’t my consent matter?
Most times, they do not have the power to question or confront what comes at them.
So they learn to live with it, carry it, and survive it in silence.
This work is for those voices….

On My Own Terms III

This piece speaks to the silent phase of healing the moment where voice is not yet loud, but self awareness has begun to take form. It honors the strength found in withdrawal, reflection, and the gradual return to self ownership.

On My Own Terms I
Oil on canvas

This work speaks to moments where choice is taken away.
When decisions are made for women without their consent.
When bodies are treated as access, not as authority.
Her stillness is not weakness.
It is control.
A quiet refusal to be defined by what was done to her.
This is about reclaiming presence, dignity, and voice.
Even after the terms were never hers.

On My Own Terms is a three-part series exploring what it means to exist in a body where choice is often questioned or denied. The works sit in quiet tension, where stillness becomes a form of control rather than absence. I was drawn to the moments after where dignity is gathered, and presence is reclaimed without spectacle. These paintings are not about victimhood, but about resistance that does not need to shout. They hold space for voices that are often silenced, insisting on autonomy, even when it was never granted.
This work is for those voices....
