25 DAYS TO GO | THE “I FEEL GOOD KID” DESI KOOLEN BACKS SA DEAF RUGBY 🇿🇦🏉🇯🇵

Today’s shout-out might come from one of our youngest supporters… but he certainly doesn’t have the smallest personality!

If you’re South African and spend any time on social media, chances are you know Desmond “Desi” Koolen — better known as the “I Feel Good Kid.”

@lifeaccordingtodesi shot to fame when his brilliant rendition of I Feel Good went viral around the world — even catching the attention of @willsmith .

But rugby fans will know that Desi’s heart is very firmly green and gold. 🇿🇦

After the Springboks returned home as World Champions in 2023, a seven-year-old Desi stood on stage in front of thousands and welcomed his heroes home. In one of those unforgettable South African rugby moments, @cheslinkolbe placed his World Cup winner’s medal around Desi’s neck. Desi promptly gave it back because, in his words, he hadn’t earned it! 🥹

Since then, he’s become a familiar little face around many of our Bok heroes — and even performed at the launch of the Cheslin Kolbe Foundation.

And Desi knows something about representing his country too. This year he represented Team South Africa at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Las Vegas, coming home with an incredible six medals and two division championship titles. 🇿🇦

So having the I Feel Good Kid behind our boys as they prepare to represent the very same flag in Japan feels pretty special.

Desi, thank you for bringing that famous energy and for backing SA Deaf Rugby on our Road to Japan.

We’re definitely FEELING GOOD about this one! 😎🇿🇦

And just like that my 4th @officialsacopa comes to a close!
At the end of last year I made the decision to change coaches and today was testament that a fresh start often brings new achievements.

I entered half the amount of items and I only did 1 duet and 19 solo acts.

I am so proud to say I received 18 solo medals and 1 for the duet.
My biggest surprise was being awarded the male overall dancer in the age 9-12 category, as well as achieving 2 gold medals in vocals for the first time in 3 years.

My total medal tally across acting, singing, dancing and modeling is 19 - 6 gold, 9 silver and 4 bronze.

I am super proud of myself and my achievements and am looking forward to a little rest until I step onto the stage as part of the ensemble cast in Oliver in January.

A 9-year-old and a legend, saying the same thing 🎙️

Joburg Times was at Nedbank IMC 2026 — Africa's Biggest Marketing Conference — this week, and two conversations stuck with us.

Desmond Koolen, aka the "I Feel Good Kid," on choosing to play outside over screen time, and chasing big dreams: "Blood, sweat and tears pay off." 💪

Dr Gcina Mhlophe, celebrated author and storyteller, on the real "shift" this year's theme was named for: "The shift must be in remembering who we are. Every one of you has got a story to tell — and a reason to be proud of it."

Yesterday, I had so much fun at the @nedbank @imcconference - Marketing is Business®️
interviewing some of the incredible speakers throughout the day.

But I have to tell you… this conversation completely fascinated me.

I sat down with Desmond Koolen better known as the “I Feel Good Kid”, a young South African Gen Alpha performer and digital creator who captured global attention after his viral rendition of James Brown’s I Feel Good.

Today, he’s one of the emerging voices representing how Gen Alpha is growing up with brands, media and digital culture in an entirely different way.

What made this interview even more special was that his mom, Adele Koolen, joined us too.

We spoke about what Gen Alpha expects from brands, what authenticity looks like through the eyes of a generation growing up online, and how they navigate Desmond’s growing fame while still protecting his childhood and managing his online behaviour.

The banter between mother and son had me in stitches. 😂
