Emerson Villaran Calles quit his dream job, said goodbye to his family and self-deported to El Salvador - a country he had not seen since he was 4.

He departed two days before Temporary Protected Status for Salvadorans was expected to expire.

Then, after he arrived, the Trump administration said Salvadorans would keep those protections for now.

The last-minute reversal is the latest example of an immigration system that has left families making impossible choices amid shifting rules and uncertainty.

Two immigrants who fell ill in ICE detention later died in hospitals.

But first, ICE declared it had released them from custody - so the agency did not have to report or investigate their deaths.
