One evening, they announce a poetry reading in Saarein. I’ve been writing poems for years. Maybe they aren’t profound poems—I’m sure of that—but rather brief observations or words set to a rhythm that come to me as I walk down the street.
Like: " There's a bomb in the mailbox."
With a letter in my hand for my beloved in London—in which I gave her an ultimatum—I walked to the mailbox and back home.
I ask my friend Marit if she’d like to accompany me on the piano, and she suggests inviting Dees to join us.
Dees says yes, and we all meet at Marit’s place, which is on a back street in the Staatsliedenbuurt neighborhood. I recite my poem, and they set it to music.
Marit handles the musical side, and Dees the rhythm.

There was no doubt about it when I was born. I was a girl. I had all the physical characteristics that made me a girl, and internally, too, I was a girl—though they didn’t know that yet.
I didn’t feel like a girl.
At Smit’s produce store on Havenstraat, much to my annoyance, I was always called ā€œyoung manā€ when it was my turn.
ā€œI’m not a young man,ā€ I said irritably, and I waited to place my order until the man who had called me ā€œyoung manā€ had said something. ā€œAll right, young lady.ā€
Although I didn’t feel like a girl, I did want to be one.

I am writing about the history of Amsterdam lesbians since 1974. I don’t pretend to know it all or that I was very active in the movement. It’s history as I saw it: from the fringes of meetings, at small tables in women’s bars, in bedrooms, at demonstrations, and in the lives of women who rarely made it into the history books.

Same text, different language

Thursday evenings grew into a nationwide phenomenon. Women came from all over the country to make music.

One woman traveled from Deventer with her saxophone to play along. She had been playing the saxophone for a long time, but mostly in her room or during music lessons at the music school. She had never played improvisationally with others before. She heard about the Thursday evenings at the Vrouwenhuis and took the train to Amsterdam. She walked from Central Station to the Vrouwenhuis and could already hear the music from the sidewalk. She was incredibly nervous but determined. She listened for a while and then took her saxophone out of its case.

A small, slender woman with a piccolo smiled encouragingly at her; she put the saxophone to her lips and blew. Everyone seemed a little startled by the loud sound of the sax, but everyone kept playing, and the woman from Deventer joined in. taken in Amsterdam, Netherlands by @adiah54

https://diahuizinga.substack.com/p/herinneringen-aan-de-donderdagavond
