The bike which set India’s first 24 hour endurance milestones for time, speed and distance has stayed alive and relevant in my garage to this day. Sporting the very same patina of sustained care and hard use (my eldest @bawabiker used it to hone his skills riding it on tight and very short go-kart tracks). It has done over 50,000 kilometres and yet runs strong and healthy, though there are the scars of war suffered on skirmishes on our roads! It had set and held the record for 19 years, 11 months and a handful of days before it was eclipsed by a bigger engine machine on a more modern circuit but you know what? The Karizma yet stands with its head held high? How and why? Simple the record it set holds good for bikes up to 250cc and that is saying something isn’t it? Augurs well for a new bike with the Karizma name plate expected sooner than you think!

Very many have seen the fish tail exhausts on classic bikes and cars, most of them sporty as well as race oriented but not many are aware as to its origins and reasons.

On a recent visit to Brooklands - the one-time temple of speed in the UK, I was able to unravel the method behind the madness courtesy of Mark Fielder, an old Brooklands hand and a terrific motorcycle expert who among other things rides a Chennai-built Royal Enfield Bullet 350!

Hear, see and marvel at the simplicity of the regulations that barred straight exhaust pipes and their sharper staccato beats in favour of deeper muffled notes bordering on melody!

There are very many Triumph motorcycles we here in India are aware of but mostly it is all about Tigers and Thunderbirds and Tridents and Bonnevilles and such but then there are the rarities as well - like this Triumph TR6 Trophy Bird, which seem to emerge only through the dedication which enthusiasts like Siddhesh Mitkar carry on their broad shoulders.

Siddhesh who is a well known name in classic motorcycling circles in western India and one who wears his heart on his sleeves when it comes to British twin-cylinder motorcycles from the 1950s to the early 1970s found this bike some two and a half decades ago in a pathetic condition. Much of it had been lost or pilfered or sold off in bits and pieces when he stumbled upon it and got its owner to sell it to him. In fact I believe the owner was more relieved to get the remnants of the bike cleared from his space and so over the years slowly but surely Siddhesh started to collect parts for the bike and only then did he commence restoration of it.

This restoration of a peach of a bike emerged at this year’s Oberoi Concours d’Elegance at Udaipur where we caught up with both the soft spoken and knowledgeable owner & his sweet sounding bike for this small presentation.

Jaden Immanuel is the first ever Indian to win a European Motorcycle Championship, Jaden becomes the 2026 ADAC Junior Cup Champion. Years of work and here we are.

And there’s more to come from this young lad!

Hats off to the bold backing of his parents who have helped steer him through the toughest kindergarten motorcycle series in Europe!

This is as much their victory as it was of Jaden!

Now the rest of the sporting Indian fraternity needs to back Jayden’s future motorcycle racing ambitions.

Work continues unabated with shooting rare discontinued bikes that once were the pride of many Indians in the 1960s & ‘70s!

All of this for my forthcoming time on 125 years of Royal Enfield.

This time we had a fabulously restored version of an RE Crusader with its two-stroke 175cc Villiers engine and while the owner permitted us to shoot the bike it had to be in his own premises.

Nevertheless my friend & fellow motorcyclist who is also a photographer par excellence - Gurushankar Subramanian was up to the challenge! You will see his handiwork in the book later this year but till then this Behind-The-Scenes shoot should give some idea of the joy & the sweat behind the shoot where he was assisted by his equally talented friend @tall_shooter aka Venkat Krishnan in making this reel.

In writing my newest book Kinetic’s Electric Energy, my first port of call outside the Firodia clan was to Chandravadan Bhandari, the erstwhile dealer principle of Pune’s renowned automotive dealer patriarch B U Bhandari Automobiles.

B U Bhandari started out as a KEL dealer & then graduated to KHML as well as Bajaj Tempo (later Force Motors). I know Chandravadan since the last 45 years & his insights into the industry then & now proved invaluable to me when penning the books.

Thank you Chandravadan & Papa Shet for your help, cooperation, support always. Your knowledge & guidance remain exemplary.

I was in Leh and adjoining regions of Ladakh for the last 6 days for the launch of a new adventure motorcycle & the bikers jamboree for five days of spirited activities, talks, seminars, and the second night I caught this bloke wearing his (and presumably our) hearts as well on his considerably sized shoulders! Keeping the queens english aside, he was spot on & the most popular man that day in Leh!
