Growing Season. 🌻 Our family of 3 is now a family of 4.

The last 9 months have been a whirlwind. It’s been one of the busiest seasons of our lives both personally and professionally. We have truly been out here fighting for our lives. Lol

This pregnancy took a lot out of Samone, and the birth even more so. We had a successful VBAC, but with forcep assistance as baby was sunny side up in asynclitic presentation and over 9lbs! None of our children like to act right in the womb apparently. Lol

We’re both still processing everything but thankful that everyone is home, safe and healthy.

So thankful to our village because there’s no way we make it through the last few months without y’all. We’re so thankful for every check in call/text, meal, play date, word of encouragement, and every offer to spend time with little Ajamu so we could rest.

Here’s to going from a season of growth to a season of rest. So much of our time is spent on the go, so we’re excited to slow down and spend time pouring into our two Black boys. 🤍

Looking forward to being in conversation with @adillahunt_ -- my fellow #Sigma Bro. -- after a screening of Michael Roemer's groundbreaking film 'Nothing But a Man' (1964) at the @nashermuseum on October 22nd.

"One of the first narrative films to offer a serious view into the lives of Black men and fathers, Nothing but a Man won the San Giorgio Prize at the Venice Film Festival and was added to the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress in 1993." by @adillahunt_

In this second clip from the presentation of Dr. @adillahunt_, we hear about how food co-ops played a role in the civil rights movement.

The Raleigh co-op, Wake Consumers Mutual Association Inc., fought for civil rights in the 1940s and 50s, creating jobs, providing food, and standing up for the black community.

BIG news: Ta-Nehisi Coates — National Book Award winner, MacArthur Fellow, and the author of “Between the World and Me,” “The Water Dancer,” and “The Message” — is coming to Hayti on August 19!

He's joining the veteran North Carolina organizer Ajamu Dillahunt and the Southeast Raleigh-raised, NCCU-educated historian Dr. Ajamu Dillahunt-Holloway for a conversation across generations of Black men on story, struggle, memory, and what we owe each other.

The thing is, this event is already sold out. While we love that, we also don’t want you finding out about the next one this way.

So, click on the links in our bio today to:

1. Grab your tickets to our upcoming events before those get sold out (we just released our new season of Hayti programming!)
2. Skip the scramble entirely and become a season subscriber

In case you missed our Community Meeting last Saturday, here's a clip from Dr. @adillahunt_'s presentation.

Did you know #RDU had an African American food co-op back in the 1940s and 50s?

It's true! Dr. Ajamu plans to resurrect the co-op's inspirational history with his upcoming pamphlet. Stay tuned for this pamphlet's publication and when we release Dr. Ajamu's full presentation on our podcast, Food For Thought: Fertile Ground Food Co-op

Today is my birthday. 29 feels amazing and I am grateful. To be honest, don’t worry about telling me happy birthday. Instead, I ask that you join, support, donate, and volunteer with Fertile Ground Food Cooperative. For over a decade we have been working to build a Black-led community owned grocery store in southeast Raleigh and we have made important strides. We have over 1,000 members, we have a location on Garner Road, will be breaking ground in a few months, designed a store from a community perspective, hit up neighborhoods on the Southside and so much more.

Join and donate at link in my bio.

I joined fertile ground in high school as a Student at Southeast Raleigh High School. As one of the earliest members of this cooperative I believe in it more now than I ever have. Instead of thinking about ownership in an individual way, we are addressing problems of racism, economic injustice, and food apartheid with a collective and communal solution. It’s not about one person or a select few owning it, it’s about an institution that is owned by the community. Governed by the community. Sustained by the community. And maintained by the community.

Our world is in a crisis on a number of different levels. For me, Fertile Ground is something we need to get out of this crisis. taken in Southeast Raleigh, Raleigh, North Carolina by @adillahunt_

In 1984, my grandparents, Ajamu Dillahunt and Rukiya Dillahunt opened Freedom Books, Raleigh’s first African American Bookstore. On July 8, we will celebrate the bookstore and its role in the African American freedom struggle and the labor movement. In 1989, the bookstore became the launching point for the 1989 boycott of Crabtree Valley Mall by Black youth in Southeast Raleigh.

Come check out the exhibit, learn about the Boycott, and celebrate Freedom Books.

TWO infinity and beyond. 🚀2️⃣🥳

Happy 2nd Birthday to our baby boy! We recently saw a poem that said to cherish every version of your child because each version is temporary, and chances are you won’t get to say goodbye.

This hits close to home, as there’s been so many changes this year, both big and small. We find ourselves holding tight to each version of you, grieving those tiny moments that are now fleeting memories.

God took everything good and poured it into you. We’re just so lucky to have a front row seat to your life! Love you Mu! ♥️🚀
