If you’ve been with us for a bit, you’ve heard us say “use the gel before the cream.” And now here we are saying, use the cream first.
The confusion is so obvious, it’s almost obnoxious.
Let us explain.
The “gel before cream” mantra stems from when we first launched the gel. At the time, the cream was our main product and the thinking was the gel would make use of the cream more effective. You would start using the gel for a few weeks, the skin would strengthen, and then you’d have a better sense of where the volume deficits are, which would then be addressed with the cream.
We’ve started straying from that mantra to something more simple.
“Use the gel on areas that are weak and saggy, and the cream on depleted areas.”
Some areas — like under the eyes, and along the mouth — are both saggy and depleted.
So how do you use both products together?
“Apply the cream, wait 10 minutes, rub excess in. Apply the gel.”
Thanks for your patience. And trust. by @adipeau

We get it.

The instructions have been vague and sometimes contradictory.

You deserve better.

Here we’ve addressed the things that come up most frequently.

Is anything missing? Or unclear?

We decided to redo the “it’s just weak skin video”

We had good intentions with the first video, but in retrospect, and thanks to some very pointed critiques lobbed our way, we realized that some of the messaging reflected prolonged exposure to skincare industry marketing. It’s hard to get that sh!t out of your system.

Thank you for holding us to a higher standard.

If we are ever being anything but helpful and transparent, please let us know.

The before-and-after images you see are from participants using two tubes of Strength Gel per month, which is the amount used in our clinical studies. If you’re using less, you may simply not be applying enough product to expect comparable results.

We also recognize that using two tubes per month is an investment. If cost has been holding you back from following the protocol used in the studies, comment “STRONG” below and we’ll send you a discount code. by @adipeau

Are you sure, Dr. Frank?

Fair enough. 99 out of 100 dermatologists would have given the same answer. Very few doctors actually stop and ask themselves what they know for sure and what they are assuming.

At the time this article ran we had no proof that the ingredients reached the skin’s fat cells. We just measured effects that were consistent with such activity. As it turns out a large Korean cosmetics company had done a version of the experiment described here in 2020 and got a similar result, albeit over a much longer test period. Our results were seen after just 6 days.

Fortunately AI gives everyone the opportunity to frame a doctor’s confident answer and reflect it back. “Are you sure?” by @adipeau

"Works at the cellular level."
You've seen it on a lot of skincare. And technically, it's true. Everything works at the cellular level. So does a glass of water.
The phrase usually shows up right after the "clinicals." A study shows a result, and the result becomes the science. But a clinical result on its own is weak evidence. It tells you something happened. It doesn't tell you how. And without the how, it's hard to know how much to trust the what.
So here's our how.
Volker Lauschke's lab at the Karolinska Institutet built tiny pieces of fat tissue from human fat cells, grown in 3D. That matters. A lot of fat cell research uses mouse cells grown flat in a dish, and those behave differently.
They tested our actives in two settings. First, while new fat cells were forming, which we call regeneration. Second, after regeneration, when the tissue already had bloated cells in it. Bloated fat cells are the ones that weaken skin.
During regeneration, KPRE (which approximates Strength Gel) and KPSS (which approximates Volume Cream) both nearly doubled the number of cells. And the tissue didn't get any bigger. More cells. Not bigger cells.
After regeneration, KPRE was still very effective at increasing cell numbers. KPSS was not. This is why we recommend Strength Gel on areas of saggy-looking skin and Volume Cream on areas of depleted-looking skin.
What this doesn't show is whether any of it happens in the skin on your face. These are human cells in a dish. Next post: do the ingredients even get there?
The paper is linked in our bio.
Have you ever wondered what "works at the cellular level" actually means? Do skincare brands talk down to you when they talk science? What other claims would you like us to dig into? by @adipeau

Whenever we post before after images, we get a few people who point out that the lighting in the images is not the same. Some suggest we use filters to improve the afters. I get it. We're in that type of industry. Those critiques make it all the sweeter to report that the editors of Computational and Structural Biotechnology Journal, a Science partner publication, has published our first clinical study alongside the amazing work of the Karolinska Institute.

To my knowledge, the study is the first to show that a topical cosmetic can improve the appearance of facial contours selectively and progressively. This does not mean that we have discovered "filler in a bottle." That's misleading and setting people up for disappointment. I prefer to think of the approach as a filler alternative. One that takes time to support the natural regenerative properties of the skin.

The study is also different from most clinical studies in that it was registered on clinical trials.gov before we started. The study also has a single, pre-specified primary endpoint. We initially had two pre-specified co-primary endpoints but realized early on that elasticity could not be measured reliably. We state that in the publication.

There are other limitations. We initially wanted to enroll 75 subjects and follow them for a year. COVID made that impossible. COVID also forced us to take all comers, even young people who had no "volume loss" to start. That turned into a positive because we could see that that they didn't gain volume appearance. In effect, they served as a negative control.

There are two other parts to the publication that we will cover with separate posts -- mechanism of action and penetration. Thank you for all of the support you've give us over the last five plus years. This is just the start of what we will do together. by @adipeau

We need a place to talk about science and the skincare industry without screaming or namecalling.
Jessie and I just kicked off myskinisweak.com. I will post a lot there. It would be great if other people would post as well.

What do you think? Are you in?

Beauty doesn’t need to hide behind filters. Neither should skincare.

We’re incredibly excited to welcome ADIPEAU to The Supermodel Project’s NYFW Model Suite.

A New York-born skincare brand that has built a cult following by questioning conventional beauty standards and putting transparency, education and real skin at the center of the conversation.

No hiding. No pretending. No chasing perfection.

Real people. Real beauty. Real transparency.

Throughout the weekend, our models will have the opportunity to discover and experience Adipeau’s cult-favorite skincare firsthand, and learn more about the thinking behind a brand that’s approaching beauty differently.

This is exactly the kind of beauty conversation we want happening at The Supermodel Project. 🖤

Welcome to the Model Suite, Adipeau.

The very best makeup artists are as discriminating as the most prestigious science journals.
I realized that it was futile to send them product. We had to be patient and wait for word of mouth to work.
Fortunately for us, it’s working.
Mariel Barrera reached out last year and now is becoming a friend. It was either meant to be or not.
The same patience is required with the science journals. We tried an unconventional approach with our most recent submission. We wanted to present the data from our 3D imaging study along with the mechanism and penetration data that the Karolinska Institute generated. It would have been easier to submit one or the other. The full submission has just been accepted to a Science-partner journal. Patience is powerful. by @adipeau

Applying Adipeau is one of those skincare steps where how you use it matters just as much as using it consistently.

I apply it intentionally to the areas where I want to support a restoring lost volume—particularly where the face can begin to look more hollow or depleted with age.

And like most things I believe in when it comes to rejuvenation, this isn't about chasing an overnight transformation. It's about consistency, supporting the tissue, and allowing time for change.

I’ll be sharing more about how I use Adipeau, where I apply it, and why it has earned a place in my personal routine.
