TRIPLE PR! 🥳 🚨 🥳

My first real milestone: snatching above my bodyweight.

Prior to this one, my last few oly sessions weren't clicking. I stepped away for 3 days from doing any lifts. And then when I returned to the platform, my warm-ups and working sets were feeling like butter 🧈. I wasn't planning on attempting PRs this day at all. But I was feeling rejuvenated, strong and fast. And I couldn't waste the opportunity to push a little harder this time.

So I finally hit a milestone that I've been eyeing for a while now. At a bodyweight of 63kg/140lbs, I succeeded in snatching 70kg / 155lbs for the first time, twice. My previous PR in this lift was 63kg/140lbs back in June this year.

For this session, I worked my way up slowly as follows:

MAIN LIFT - Snatch

Slide 2: 56kg / 125lbs
Slide 3: 61kg / 135lbs
Slide 4: 65kg / 145lbs - pr1
Slide 5: 68kg / 150lbs - pr2
Slide 6 & 7 : 70kg / 155lbs - pr3

ACCESSORY LIFTS:

Slide 8: 3x3 snatch grip push press + overhead squat @ 61kg/135lbs

Slide 9 & 10: 3x3 Snatch pulls w/ pause @ 74kg/165lbs & 79kg/175lbs

Still lots to work on for technique. But i treasure personal victories, whether big or small. It's been a while since I've been this happy about a lift, especially after spending so much time working at lower intensities ☺️🙏

I think from my snatch pulls at the end, you can guess what my next target will be 🎯😏

THANKS FOR READING 😁

SCIENCE! 🫪

So apparently, the biomechanics for an optimal snatch trajectory is not always a perfectly straight vertical line, but instead a kind of S-curve, more of a flattened S really 🤔. That part is strange to me though because I always thought a straight bar path is ideal. I know different coaches have different positions on this. But regardless, my main priority is to just keep the bar as close to my body as possible. 🤞

In a snatch, the lift has 3 phases. The first pull, second pull, and third pull or the turnover and catch.

In the first pull, the bar moves from the floor to the knees. In my video here, I control the bar slowly at first, as I make it travel from the floor to my knees. My goal here is to keep the bar path as straight as possible. The result however shows a slight curve as I maneuver the bar around my knees in preparation for the second pull. It's kinda minor, so I don't mind this too much, but it is still something I'd like to be aware of. 👀

In the second pull, the bar accelerates past the knees, and towards my hip crease, just as I initiate an explosive extension of my hips, knees, and ankles. The contact point of the hip crease during extension causes the bar to naturally move away from my body, creating a slight horizontal displacement of the bar. However, the hallmark of elite technique is that while the bar moves forward during this phase, it should minimize crossing the vertical reference line extending up from where the bar originally began on the floor. For the most part, I've done alright self-correcting the bar path to keep it close to my body rather than horizontally being shifted away too much.🤔

Lastly, in the third pull, or the turnover and catch, as I achieve maximum bar height and pull myself into the squat position, the bar must travel back towards me to stabilize securely over my base of support. Here I attempted to actively pull myself under the bar as it reaches its greatest height.

Continuing the pink theme this week.

Also I promise this isn't my room. But it has a giant fancy mirror and I like how this turned out 😆💅

"It's October 3rd" 🤭

In this session, I cut out the jerk or any overhead work. I wanted to do a "push day" session the following day so I figured leaving that movement out this time around would work best.

I'm struggling to have a faster elbow turnover on the catch. I honestly just forget to actively think about it. It's one of those times where I need someone to yell it at me 😅 for the intent to surface during the movement.

Thank you to @icatchbars for letting me screenshot his meme (7th slide). Wish I saw that before going into this session.

I didn't do too well doing doubles at 82% on my final 2 sets of my snatch. In retrospect, my usual intention to complete the lift wasn't as locked in as I'd like it to be. I didn't sit in the hole longer and/or sooner that I should have. This is also somewhat of a recent weight I'm working with, as it was only in June this year I power snatched 61kg.

I was also trying to slow my lift down without putting too much power. My goal was to catch the bar lower and feel out the bar path more. I think need lots more training working with a slower bar at this weight so that I'm more cognizant of dropping down asap at point of contact.

This session's program:

1) Snatch pull + snatch
4 x 1+1

2) Snatch balance
3x3

3) Snatch-grip panda pulls
3x3

On the bright side, looking at my panda pulls ( 77kg / 170lbs), I THINK I might be able to snatch that. It's just not something I'd attempt without a few sessions overhead squatting /snatch balancing AT LEAST 95kg / 210LBS first. Just to be safe.

Decided to try a new-ish accessory today. Inspired by @naomiealice 's training :) I've never done strict presses in the split jerk stance before. My goal for this accessory is to not only work on overhead strength and stability while being in the split position, but also to develop tendon strength in my left knee when doing a split jerk. The tension created during the repetitions of the overhead strict presses in the split stance will help expose my left knee to prolonged strain, strengthening its capacity for heavier ballistic loads. The end result, hopefully in a few months, is to make the split jerks of my current 1rm of 85%-90%+ feel like 75%-80% when it comes time to attempt new prs.

Session's program:

1) Hang clean + clean
1+1 x4

2) Strict Press in the split jerk stance
 5x3

3) Clean Pulls
3x3
