Yesterday would have been the legendary playwright August Wilson’s 80th birthday. Truly “America’s Shakespeare,” his American Century Cycle immortalized the Black American experience with each play set in a different decade of the 20th century capturing a range of experiences and humanity.

For the past four years, I’ve had the privilege of producing a documentary about his life, his legacy, and the Hill District community that shaped him. I’m so grateful to have learned from the people of the Hill District, a historic cultural epicenter that faced devastating displacement during the urban renewal of the 1950s, yet still stands strong today with extraordinary pride and resilience. Our team has also witnessed the restoration of his childhood home on 1727 Bedford Avenue— from filming on a construction site to seeing it transformed into a vibrant artist development center.

This journey has taken me from the Hill District to Italy, where we’ve interviewed August’s friends, family, and international artists whose lives have been touched by his work. I’ve spent hours digging through his personal archives at Pitt —footage, letters, photographs, and self-portraits. The archive is now open to the world so more can experience the beauty of his life and work.

August Wilson believed that all art is political. Through his plays, he raised critical issues with grace and unflinching honesty, creating one of the most powerful bodies of work in American history. Under the weight of today’s times, when so much is being stripped away, his legacy is more urgent than ever. Art has the power to heal, to shape our culture, and confront policy.

Working on this film alongside an incredible team has been one of the greatest honors of my life. We hope this documentary will honor his name and continue to inspire generations to come!!

If you’ve never experienced his work— read his plays, watch the film adaptations (like The Piano Lesson or Fences on Netflix), and experience his poetry and power. His words are as essential now as ever!!! taken in Hill District (Pittsburgh) by @aditisridhar_

Happy birthday to my best friend and little brother all in one. It’s rare to have a siblinghood like ours — thank you for being an ever present calm to my chaos, our family psychic, musical glue, and being the empathetic and kind person you are. I strive to be more like you every day! To many more adventures and stupid fights and songwriting and annoying you. There are many embarrassing photos to be unleashed but I’ll spare you for now :) by @aditisridhar_

Aloo Poori is available to watch for free this month as part of the @voiceswithimpact film festival!

Screening as part of Mental Health Shorts 2: Parents & Children, we’re honored to screen alongside bold, tender stories exploring mental health through family relationships.

Aloo Poori is a story about unspoken love, generational care, and the complicated ways we show up for one another, centering a South Asian immigrant mother denying her mental health needs while desperately holding onto a sacred culinary tradition. Her daughter is stuck at the intersection between letting go with confidence and holding on before leaving her mother for the first time in her life.

Thank you to @voiceswithimpact for curating such a powerful selection and making it free and accessible to all.

Aloo Poori will be having its first out of country premiere at the UK Asian Film Festival! Honored to be part of the Short Film Competition, where the theme is “Longing and Belonging.” Our goal of the film was to explore the journeys of searching for connection and identity, navigating generational differences and major life changes, so we couldn’t be more grateful to be part of this line up.

Thanks to the team at @ukasianfilmfest for the opportunity! London/UK friends, definitely consider attending! Check out tonguesonfire.com for tickets
