This was the summer of “plan b” and pivot hikes.

It started with early snow melt that allowed me to go places in June that usually aren’t accessible until August.

Then I had to scratch half my summer hike list because of wildfires.

And then there’s this lake. There was work on the road in all summer long and I got turned around multiple times. I ended up hiking several nearby trails which were incredibly epic.

I kept trying and finally got through - nice capstone to this summer.

Some summer things I never posted (multiple captions coming, scroll over) - I met this pika halfway up the White Ledges scramble route on Kaleetan Peak. He alternated between curious and trying to hide. I ended up changing my route up the rocks to give him space.

This is one of my favorite pics from the summer… I don’t really know why - looking at Chair Peak from the base of the White Ledges.

The Little Giant Fire framed by the true summit of Snoqualmie Mountain.

The Three Queens Fire had just blown up a day before this hike. Here it is with Kendall Peak in the foreground. It was so strange having this perfect hike day and yet feeling like I was watching the world on fire.

This is a massive old growth cedar tree near North Lake. I didn’t think my photo had captured the size of it. But looking now, maybe it did?

The Instagram vs reality moment… sometimes a place is totally epic and you just can’t get a photo that conveys it. This is Fisher Lake. I hiked here mainly to try and find a spot from an old photo my wife had taken here 15 years ago.

This time of year my camera fills up with mushroom photos, most of which I never post.

I found a fourth approach to the Little Si scramble route and was so proud of myself… and then was like, “does anyone need to see yet more pics of this one?”

This is Big Heart Lake - the soundtrack was a guy talking to me, so I had posted a still photo instead of this. I muted that here.

And every once in a while you realize a picture or video just can’t do some places justice. by @aditurner

Let’s go on a hike. Thanks to some folks back in the 40s and some road paint, we know where we are. (Multiple captions coming, scroll over.)

I started here, up one of those, “does the car have enough clearance?” type of roads. Then there were a couple of miles of roots and mud to this lake. Now I just need to find the route.

I found the “trail.” 😂

Kinda steep. You can tell why they named it “Iodine Gulch.” Or maybe it’s obvious to someone my age… do moms still use that as antiseptic on their kids when the scrape themselves up?

Apparently this used to be called “20 Lakes Basin.” Think I found them.

I won’t bore you with too many lake pictures…

Time for a dip?

Apparently if you climb the peak here you can see Way-Too-Popular Lake over the ridge and down below. I’ll save that for next time. Now if I could just convince my hiking friends to climb the Gulch with me… by @aditurner

I honestly think one of the top hiking skills is knowing when to turn around, and being able to let go of whatever peak or lake you’re trying to get up to.

Yesterday I had a chance to practice that when AQI didn’t do what they’d predicted. If you looked up at the peak in the second pic, would you still hike up?

Fortunately there were a couple of awesome nearby lakes that had better air quality. by @aditurner
