For many of us who grew up in India in the 90s, Cricket was more than a sport. It quietly mirrored the journey of the country itself. Back then, for most middle-class families, life largely revolved around making ends meet. There was ambition and aspiration, but there were also limitations that shaped everyday life. Yet there was always a fire, a desire that someday we would stand shoulder to shoulder with the very best in the world.

Cricket became the sport that carried that emotion. As cricket fans, our lives almost seemed to move parallel to the state of Indian cricket over the last three decades. However, winning a World Cup often felt more like a distant dream than a realistic expectation. And then, there were teams like Australia who looked almost invincible. Clinical, ruthless and miles ahead of everyone else.

In some ways, that feeling mirrored how we saw ourselves as a country as well. We were still largely considered the “third world”, and sometimes that imbalance even reflected on the cricket field. Incidents like the infamous Monkeygate episode in Australia only added to those frustrations.

Over the last decade though, a lot has changed. India as a cricketing nation has risen remarkably. The IPL opened new doors and gave Indian cricket a different level of confidence and global influence. Yet despite dominating tournaments, the big ICC trophies somehow kept eluding us.

When we lost the World Cup final to Australia on 19 November 2023 in Ahmedabad, one thought stayed with me. When would the next chance come to see India win a World Cup in front of my eyes? This tournament felt like the closest possibility since that evening in Ahmedabad. And yesterday, it finally happened.

To watch India create history by winning the World Cup at home felt special on many levels. For fans who have followed this journey for decades, from the days of hoping against hope to the days of believing we can beat anyone, it felt like the culmination of a long emotional arc.

Yesterday felt like a full circle moment.

A dream come true.
A once-in-a-lifetime experience.

First.
And hopefully not the last. taken in Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad by @adityabose27
