We are thrilled to announce the second year of the Mountaineer Avalanche Education Scholarship for winter 2026-2027. @mountaineerbandana

A pillar of our community for more than 50 years, The Mountaineer, located in Keene Valley, is an iconic outdoor specialty store that has been a purveyor of fine mountaineering and outdoor equipment since 1975.

The Mountaineer has generously donated $1500 to be awarded to applicants seeking to further their avalanche education. One $500 scholarship will be available in addition to four $250 scholarships.

We will be prioritizing folks who live, work, and play in the Adirondacks, and who have a clear vision for how continuing their avalanche education will help them achieve personal recreation goals while supporting their community.

Applications are due October 11th. Visit the link in our bio, or the scholarship page on our website to apply! taken in Adirondacks, High Peaks Region by @adkavy

Starting today a significant winter storm will move through the High Peaks and deposit more than a foot of snow across the region. At times, snowfall rates will exceed 1 inch per hour. Heavy snowfall is a clear red flag. 🚩

With this rapid loading event expect to see increased avalanche activity and hazard over the next couple of days āš ļø

Don’t fall victim to the scarcity mindset, beware of powder fever. As you head out, make good decisions and consider sharing your observations via the submission form on our website.

Our Beacon Park is live, and ready for you to use! Huge thank you to everyone who helped make this a reality, all your donations large and small made this possible.

This park is free to use anytime you’d like! Please park at the clubhouse at Scott’s Cobble Nordic Center. Click into your skis and slide your way east down the hill to find the training park. Please be mindful of the various groomed trails and do not posthole the trails! Practice as you would be traveling, on skis! If you don’t have your own, avalanche rescue gear can be rented onsite from the Nordic center.

Stay tuned for details about our grand opening event on Saturday January 31st! In the meantime get out there and practice your rescue skills.

Special thanks to @highpeakscyclery for recognizing the value of this effort and making space for the park. This project was made possible by a LEAF grant from the town of North Elba.

Shout out to local crusher and adk avy member @taipan_man for the assist in setting things up this afternoon. taken in Scotts Cobble by @adkavy

Starting tonight a significant winter storm will move through our region with the potential to deposit around 12 inches of snow in localized areas in the High Peaks.

Expect to see increased avalanche activity and hazard over the next couple of days. While this storm is a welcome rebound from our recent rain events, this new snow will fall on a stout rain crust on all aspects and elevations. This crust could provide an excellent bed surface for this incoming storm slab. Any size avalanche, particularly one that involves a terrain trap, could cause significant trauma. As you head out, make decisions that are appropriate for the conditions and a high degree of uncertainty as we give this new snow a chance to bond. Please consider sharing your observations via the submission form on our website.

Starting this afternoon, a significant winter storm will move through the High Peaks with the potential to deposit up to 12 inches of snow in localized areas.

Where there is enough snow to ride there is enough snow to slide.

Expect to see increased avalanche activity and hazard over the next couple of days. While this storm is a welcome rebound from our recent warm spell, remember what it is burying. This new snow will fall on a thin base full of early season hazards, be wary of obstacles just beneath the new snow. A rain crust also now exists in our snowpack at all elevations and on all aspects which you can expect to find just below this storm. Any size avalanche, particularly one that involves a terrain trap, could cause significant trauma given the shallow snowpack. As you head out, make decisions that are appropriate for the conditions and a high degree of uncertainty as we give this new snow a chance to bond. Please consider sharing your observations via the submission form on our website.

Since launching our Beacon Park Fundraiser on September 23rd, we’ve raised over a quarter of the funds needed to purchase a permanent beacon park.

What is a beacon park?

A beacon park is a way for backcountry skiers and snowboarders to practice their rescue skills. Becoming proficient with these skills is a necessity to safely travel through avalanche terrain. In a beacon park, a set of targets is buried under the snow that mimics the signal of a beacon in ā€œsend modeā€. Beacon park users switch their transceivers to ā€œsearch modeā€ to find the targets. The search ends when the user strikes all active targets under the snow with their probe. A control box mounted nearby allows the user to remotely turn on the targets and to design the scenario they’d like to practice. With each successful probe strike, the control box emits a tone.

Where will the beacon park be?

Lake Placid! We’re working with High Peaks Cyclery and Scotts Cobble Nordic Center to find a home for the beacon park at the Scotts Cobble Nordic Center. This resource will be available free of charge for everyone to use throughout the winter months.

Along with your donations, this project will be funded by a LEAF Grant from the town of North Elba to partially fund the purchase and construction of the beacon park.

Help us get to our $3500 goal! Follow the link in our bio to our donation page.

Thanks so much for your continued support for our project. Winter is HERE ā„ļø
