Five people and organisations who have given Adopt a Grandparent something extraordinary over the past year.

At our inaugural Charity Awards, we finally had the opportunity to put some of those people in the spotlight and say a proper thank you.

Our 2026 winners have supported AAG in very different ways, from giving their time and championing our work to opening new doors, raising funds and helping us reach more older people living in care homes.

Congratulations to: Grandparent of the Year - Michael Devlin, Wellbeing Activity Co-ordinator of the Year - Shobha Lakshminarayan, Volunteer of the Year - Daniel Dominick, Fundraiser of the Year - Esher Manor Care Home, and Supporter of the Year - Margaret Atiror.

We know none of them do what they do for an award, which made it even nicer to see them receive one. We’ve loved sharing more about their achievements and the reasons they were chosen over the past few days.

A huge thank you to Care Shop for sponsoring the event, and to everyone who joined us to celebrate the people who make Adopt a Grandparent what it is.

We’re incredibly grateful to have you all as part of the AAG family. 💙

There could only be one Michael.

We were delighted to name Michael Devlin, from The Spinney Nursing Home, Caring UK, our Grandparent of the Year at the first Adopt a Grandparent Charity Awards.

Michael has become one of AAG’s greatest ambassadors. This year, he took to the stage alongside David Annand at the Care Shop Conference, speaking in front of 150 adult social care leaders about their friendship and his experience of Adopt a Grandparent.

He has appeared in our videos, featured across our social channels and become a familiar face in presentations about the charity.

Most importantly, Michael has shown exactly what can happen when two people are given the opportunity to get to know one another.

Michael, thank you for sharing your story so generously and for representing AAG with so much warmth, humour and personality. We couldn’t think of a more deserving Grandparent of the Year.

From introducing Adopt a Grandparent to residents at her own care home to opening doors for us across the wider care sector, Margaret Atiror has become an exceptional supporter of AAG.

Margaret and the wellbeing team at Parkview Care Home, Avante Care & Support, were quick to bring the programme into the home after first meeting with us.

Since then, Margaret has continued to champion the charity.

She and her team featured in our 2025 annual review video, and throughout 2026 she has personally introduced AAG to contacts across social care and co-presented with us at a number of Skills for Care events, sharing the benefits of the programme with other care homes.

That kind of support makes a genuine difference to a small charity. Every introduction can lead us to another care home, another resident and another potential friendship.

Margaret, thank you for using your voice, your connections and your time to help AAG reach further.

We were very proud to name you our Supporter of the Year.

Supporter of the Year was sponsored by Mark Beadle - one of our wonderful Ambassadors.

Fashion, fundraising and a whole care home community getting involved.

Our Fundraiser of the Year award went to Esher Manor Care Home, Avery Collection, after Joanna Perry and the team organised a charity fashion show in support of Adopt a Grandparent.

We particularly loved the way the event brought everybody in.

Residents and team members took part, the local community got behind it and the evening gave people the chance to have fun together while raising vital funds for AAG.

It was creative, inclusive and full of personality, exactly the kind of fundraising we enjoy seeing.

Esher Manor also supports us as a Friend of AAG, making its commitment to the charity extend well beyond one event.

Congratulations to Joanna and everyone at Esher Manor, and thank you for finding such a memorable way to support our work.

Fundraiser of the Year was sponsored by Herrington Carmichael LLP.

Celebrating Adopt-a-Grandparent 💙✨

Our Directors, Salima and Rahim, were honoured to attend the @adoptagrandp charity awards and celebrate the incredible work of such an amazing charity. It’s amazing to see how much Adopt-a-Grandparent has grown, with thousands of volunteers now registered and so many meaningful connections being created.

We’re fortunate to have experienced the difference these connections can make at TWH, including Chris, who looks forward to his weekly chats with Will. 💬❤️

A huge congratulations to all the winners and the entire Adopt-a-Grandparent team! 🏆

Some people see an opportunity and run with it. Shobha Lakshminarayan did exactly that.

Since introducing Adopt a Grandparent at Southborough Care Home, Care UK, Shobha has become a brilliant advocate for the programme and the friendships it can create.

She quickly saw the difference regular one-to-one conversations could make for residents and has gone on to share those connections with others, both through social media and by taking part in AAG videos encouraging more care homes to get involved.

That enthusiasm has helped our work travel far beyond Southborough.

We were delighted to recognise Shobha as our Wellbeing Activity Co-ordinator of the Year.

Thank you, Shobha, for championing AAG, sharing what you have seen first-hand and helping more people discover what the programme can offer.

Daniel Dominick was just 13 when he joined Adopt a Grandparent.

More than three and a half years later, he is still volunteering with us and is now our longest-standing active volunteer.

Daniel originally joined in January 2023 as part of his Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award. At the time, he told us he had considered several volunteering opportunities, but AAG stood out because of his own relationship with his grandparents.

He wrote: “I am very family oriented and live abroad from half of my grandparents, so don’t get to see them as much as I’d like to.”

What began as a Duke of Edinburgh volunteering placement became a commitment that has continued well beyond the award itself.

Over the years, Daniel has shown patience, reliability and a genuine interest in building friendships across generations.

We are incredibly proud to name him our Volunteer of the Year.

Congratulations, Daniel, and thank you for giving your time so consistently over the past three and a half years.

What a brilliant afternoon celebrating the very first Adopt a Grandparent Charity Awards.

We were so proud to sponsor the event, as well as the Grandparent of the Year award, and to spend the afternoon celebrating the people helping create meaningful companionship for older people.

One moment that really stayed with us was hearing Shaleeza, founder of Adopt a Grandparent, speak about why she started the charity and the experiences that shaped it.

Hearing the story behind the charity was such a lovely reminder of what makes Adopt a Grandparent so special. It isn’t simply about introducing two people. It’s about making sure older people feel heard, valued and connected, and creating friendships where stories, experience and a good old chat can be shared.

And then came a particularly special moment for us.

Our Managing Director, Sam Tinsley, had the pleasure of presenting the Grandparent of the Year award to the wonderful Michael.

Michael is already a familiar face to us at Care Shop. Earlier this year, he joined us at our Leadership Summit and gave us a brilliant insight into what life in a care home is really like. He had the whole room laughing then, and unsurprisingly, his awards speech did exactly the same again.

Michael never fails to make us smile, and seeing him recognised felt incredibly well deserved.

We absolutely love working with Adopt a Grandparent and seeing the friendships, conversations and moments of connection they help make possible. Yesterday was a lovely reminder of just how much difference that can make.

Congratulations to Michael, all of the award winners, Shaleeza, David, and the whole Adopt a Grandparent community on a very special first awards. 💚

It was an absolute joy to be part of the Adopt a Grandparent annual award event on the occasion of Grandparents Day. 💚 @adoptagrandp

Thank you Vicky from @carehome_co_uk for sponsoring the award for Wellbeing Coordinator of the Year! Thanks to all the supporters of this amazing initiative! It was great to share stories and experiences!

At the heart of Adopt a Grandparent is something so simple, yet so incredibly important - helping tackle loneliness and creating meaningful connections for care home residents!

Loneliness can have such a profound impact, and the opportunity to have regular conversations, share stories, laugh together and simply know that someone is there to listen can mean so much. Visit the website to donate, sponsor, support and volunteer!

Through weekly calls and meaningful connections, Adopt a Grandparent is making a real difference to the lives of so many residents. We have seen this first hand at Southborough, part of Care UK 💜

Incredibly thankful to the wonderful Southborough team for their commitment and support, and to Kamal Gill for her continued support and encouragement.

Thanks to Ruth and Carol for showing us how beautiful connections can be made at any age with their weekly calls with wonderful AAG volunteers Emily and Kelly!

A huge shout-out to all the amazing volunteers who give their time, and hope more and more corporate volunteers and sponsors help make these connections possible. Every conversation, every smile and every moment of companionship matters.

Thank you, Shaleeza Hasham and David Annand, for creating and championing such a meaningful initiative. What you are doing to bring people together and reduce loneliness is truly priceless.

Wishing the entire Adopt a Grandparent team an amazing year ahead. 💙

Thank you to all the kind sponsors for making such a lovely event possible 💜

What a way to celebrate our very first Adopt a Grandparent Charity Awards.

Today, we brought together care home partners, volunteers, sponsors, trustees, ambassadors and friends of AAG for an afternoon dedicated to the people who give their time, energy and support to our charity throughout the year.

There was plenty to celebrate. New friendships, a growing community, five very deserving award recipients and, above all, a room full of people who share our determination to help more older people enjoy regular companionship.

Coming just after Grandparents’ Day, it felt like exactly the right moment to recognise the adopted grandparents at the heart of our work, as well as those who help make every introduction, call and friendship possible.

A huge thank you to Care Shop, whose sponsorship helped us bring today’s event to life, and to every person who joined us.

We hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.

There is much more to share from the afternoon, including our official photography and the stories behind our award winners, so keep an eye on our pages over the coming days.

For now, from all of us at Adopt a Grandparent, thank you for making our first awards an afternoon we will remember for a very long time.

A huge thank you to Cecile, manager at CHD Living, who recently took fundraising to new heights with a skydive in aid of Adopt a Grandparent.

By jumping out of a plane, Cecile has raised an incredible £878 to support our work tackling loneliness and bringing generations together through meaningful companionship.

It takes a special kind of person to choose a challenge like this, and we are so grateful for her courage, kindness and commitment to making sure older people feel seen, valued and connected.

Every pound raised helps us continue building friendships between volunteers and older adults, creating conversations, laughter and relationships that can make a real difference to someone’s life.

From everyone at Adopt a Grandparent, thank you Cecile. What an amazing achievement, and what a wonderful way to support our mission.
