Sometimes I wonder what little Adrianne would think if she could see where curiosity would take her.

She probably wouldn’t notice the speaking engagements, the cameras, or the magazine articles.

She’d go straight to the books.

She was the little girl who loved learning before she knew words like gemologist, contributor, or educator even existed.

Years later, I found myself sitting in the library at my alma mater holding The Jewelry Book, a book I had the privilege of contributing to.

For a moment, it felt like two versions of me were in the same room.

One was still dreaming. The other was quietly saying, “Keep going.” I know she’d be so proud.

And honestly… I’m proud of her, too. ❤️

For almost three years, I avoided my lab.

#grief changed my relationship with a place that had once held so much curiosity, discovery and joy. I could walk past it, but I couldn’t bring myself to really return to it.

Until I did.

I turned on the microscope. I started looking at inclusions again. Comparing color. Moving stones through my hands. Watching entire worlds appear beneath magnification.

And then I felt it again.

The wonder.

The curiosity. The excitement. The joy of wanting to know what I was looking at, how it formed and why it looked the way it did.

I hadn’t lost my love of gemology.

I just needed time to find my way back to it.

And in true fashion, Mr Chow opened and closed the lab experience like he runs the place. I mean, to be fair, he probably does. 🐾🥽🤷🏽‍♀️

What happens when literature meets watchmaking? 📖⌚

At Windup Watch Fair New York, I spoke with Nousseïma, founder of Paris-based Buci Watches, about Nouvelles, a collection inspired by the beauty of ordinary moments and the stories we live each day.

From details reminiscent of a fountain pen nib to design elements inspired by the pages of a book, she brings her passions for reading, writing, and horology together in a distinctly poetic interpretation of time.

Her wish for the person wearing a Buci watch? Beautiful hours.

The Nouvelles collection is currently on Kickstarter through November 15, 2026.

A watch dial made from an NFL football? 🏈⌚

At Windup Watch Fair New York, I spoke with Wolfgang Heinrich, founder of Stuttgart-based HEINRICH Watches, about his vintage-inspired designs and unconventional materials.

From amethyst and red tiger’s-eye to carnelian, real peacock feather, and leather sourced from Horween, his watches bring unexpected textures and materials to the dial.

Wolfgang also introduced two new watches launched for Windup New York, including a striking peacock-feather dial and a carnelian design inspired by Art Deco.

At 8:16 a.m., there was one person waiting.

By 1:50 p.m., the line for Windup Watch Fair New York stretched around the building.

In Manhattan, that’s quite a sight. ⌚🗽

What brought everyone out? A shared enthusiasm for watches, independent watchmaking, and the people bringing fresh ideas to horology.

I spent the day discovering designs, meeting watchmakers, and recording five interviews that take us beyond the dial.

I’m looking forward to introducing you to the people and stories behind the watches.

Stay tuned. 🎤

NEXT STOP: NEW YORK CITY. 🗽⌚

The watches are fascinating. The people behind them? Even more so.

This Saturday, October 17, I’m heading to Windup Watch Fair NYC to explore independent watchmaking through the lens of craftsmanship, creativity, and the people changing the industry.

I’m especially looking forward to conversations with women bringing fresh perspectives to watch design.

New discoveries. New conversations. New stories.

Stay tuned. 🎥

🧦 What can a slouching stocking tell us about an alchemist?

Quite a lot, apparently.

At Fire and Gold: The Art of Alchemy, 1450–1850 at @scihistoryorg, curator Elisabeth Berry Drago walked me through The Alchemist, a painting filled with clues.

The workshop appears to be in complete disarray. Equipment, papers and vessels surround a figure whose fallen stocking adds another visual cue that something may have gone very wrong.

But then Elisabeth directs our attention to his left hand.

There, amid all that disorder, is a vivid red material.

In alchemy, the red stage, or rubedo, represented a crucial stage of transformation and could signal success in the search for the philosopher’s stone.

So what exactly are we looking at?

A careless alchemist surrounded by the evidence of failure?

Or someone who may have achieved the very thing he was searching for?

Sometimes the smallest detail changes the entire story.

⚗️ What does alchemy have to do with the way we understand science today?

Jesse Smith, Vice President of Interpretation and Education and Director of the Museum at @scihistoryorg, says the answer is continuity.

We often think of alchemy as something far in the past, but the history of science is also a long process of creating, testing and using knowledge about the world.

That process did not simply stop when alchemy gave way to chemistry.

At the press preview for Fire and Gold: The Art of Alchemy, 1450–1850, I asked Jesse why this story matters now and what he hopes visitors take away from the exhibition.

His answer brings the past directly into the present: looking closely at how people generated knowledge centuries ago can help us think about how we generate and use knowledge today.

⚗️ Where does alchemy end and chemistry begin?

🗣️According to Elisabeth Berry Drago, curator of Fire and Gold: The Art of Alchemy, 1450–1850 at @scihistoryorg in Old City, Philadelphia, that line can be thin, blurry, or sometimes nonexistent.

🖼️ The paintings in this exhibition offer more than scenes of strange laboratories and mysterious experiments. Look closely and they reveal equipment, materials, working practices, skepticism, ambition and the gradual transformation of alchemy into what we recognize as modern chemistry.

📰I joined the press preview in Philadelphia for a closer look at the exhibition and asked Elisabeth to take us inside those laboratories through the paintings themselves.

🧰🤔Because sometimes the best way to understand the history of science is to look at what was happening on the workbench.
