I’ve decided I’m going to start posting about the books I read each month. I always love seeing what other people are reading and I tend to recommend my favorites to people and they end up enjoying them as well.
These are the books I read in July:

¿Por qué no ganamos la Guerra del Chaco? by Rogelio Ayala Moreira
My great grandfather son of German immigrants died in this war and I always try to learn more about it. This book gave me a much better understanding of the political and military decisions behind the conflict. It was a bit of a heavy read, though, and I’d love to see a modernized version someday.

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir
This was recommended by one of my lab partners, and I’m so glad I read it. Working in STEM, science is part of my everyday life, so it was really fun reading about the things I use in the lab everyday in the context of such a good story.

As Long as the Lemon Trees Grow by Zoulfa Katouh
I picked this up because I wanted to better understand the conflict in Syria from a more personal perspective. It’s easy to get comfortable in your own life and forget the stories people in other parts of the world have lived through. This was recommended by someone from Syria whose family experienced many of the things the book talks about, and I’m so grateful they did. It was a 10/10 for me. I cried, I learned a lot, and it’s a book I’ll be thinking about for a long time.

A Little History of Poetry by John Carey
I picked this up out of curiosity, and it was not what I expected. It’s a little hard to follow at times, but it gives you the background behind some of the most famous poems in the world. Very educational.

A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah
This is another book I picked up to ground myself in reality. Sometimes it’s easy to take our lives for granted while people in other parts of the world have lived through unimaginable things. It’s the memoir of a former child soldier during the civil war in Sierra Leone. It’s graphic, heartbreaking, and somehow an easy and captivating read. Would 100% recommend. by @adribazo
