This month I reread the fourth instalment in the A Song of Ice and Fire series for the first time in about four years, and it made me reassess my initial opinion of the book. While I remembered little to nothing about the plot itself, I did recall being overall disappointed and confused about the direction the series was taking. On reread, however, I’ve come to value A Feast for Crows for what it offers. It is nowhere near as magnificent as A Storm of Swords, I’ll admit, and it takes a step back when it comes to action, instead crafting a haunting portrayal of the aftermath of war. That should not be taken to mean that the volume is boring or uneventful; quite the contrary, the political intrigue and the focus on character development make for an intriguing and (at times) haunting novel. I can’t believe only one book stands between me and being able to say that I’ve read the entire series. There’s so much I loved about Howling Dark, and yet it wasn’t quite what I expected… I continue to deeply appreciate the prose, the melancholic and dramatic tone, and the worldbuilding, and I do agree that this book was a step up from Empire of Silence (which I thought was an astounding debut btw). That being said, I believe my expectations got the better of me and, while I still loved the book, I don’t think I’m nearly as obsessed with this series as I imagined I would be. I still think Sun Eater has the potential to become a favourite of mine, and I hear that the third instalment, Demon in White, is the best one yet!! Well, hi! 🫢🏼 Long time no see (who’s surprised at this point? πŸ’€). It’s been a while, I know, but I’ve been busy, what with the master’s degree, moving away to another city, starting a career as a translator (or attempting to, at any rate)… It’s been a frantic couple of years. Losing three of my cats in 2023 was another factor that hindered my ability and motivation to be active on here, but a lot has changed, and I feel I’m ready to come back and actually have fun with this. For the last two years, I’ve been focusing less on the quantity and more on the quality perhaps for the first time in my life… and it’s definitely improved my relationship with reading (who knew lmao). When I first read Dune in 2021, I ended up giving it a 2.5-star rating because, quite frankly, I was too distracted thinking about what I would read next and how many books I needed to read to complete my goodreads challenge (a lot has been said about this issue, so I won’t bore you). This January I decided to finally give it a second chance and, after giving it the time it deserves, I found that my perspective on the novel had changed entirely. In fact, it’s now become one of my all-time favourites. And that summarises how I’ve transformed the way I interact with books since the last time I posted: I’ve been taking my time, doing a lot of rereading, and also discovering some new and exciting series (but that’s a story for another day). by @adribooks

There's so much I loved about this book, I don't even know where to begin. R.F. Kuang has been one of my favourite authors ever since I read The Poppy War trilogy, so you can image my expectations for this book were incredibly high. As a philology student, I was engrossed by every single discussion on translation and linguistics. After three years in university, learning can become a tiresome endeavour, but this book has managed to remind me exactly why I love this field of study. On a different note, I think Babel does a great job in carrying across an extremely important message that is many times forgotten; revolution and change aren't pretty. Violence is a tool, one that the system does not hesitate to use. When long-lasting change is the goal, we must embrace this tool or be defeated. I believe we have much to learn from this. I also found the setting to be especially atmospheric, the characters complicated and layered. All in all, a memorable and striking story. by @adribooks

Just finished The Hobbit a few days ago, and it was so much fun!!!
