We'll be working in the wood shop and playing with illuminating translucent materials through design experimentation, along with learning how to custom wire a lamp with a cord/socket/switch/plug/bulb set 💡 workshop link with all the deets are in my bio^^

aestuarium * New work *

Guided by tides, wind, and gravity, currents move across the San Francisco Bay - a dynamic shifting body shaped by force and flow. This artwork was created by translating measurements of the velocity and direction of the Bay’s water currents into an evocative carved texture. The wall hung sculpture's new home overlooks the Embarcadero with a broad view of the Bay Bridge.

An estuary is a place where river and ocean meet, and the word itself comes from the Latin derived from aestus (“tide, surge, swelling”). This Bay is the largest tidal estuary on the West Coast of North America, a dynamic threshold between inland watershed and open sea.

Spring has arrived at Samuel Merritt University’s new downtown Oakland campus.  EinwillerKuehl‘s landscape design celebrates this historic and nationally recognized leader in healthcare education with a worthy arrival plaza spotlighting plantings that highlight the links between human and ecosystem health.

Only 200 editions of this rare book of handmade Japanese paper were made - this one is held in the rare book collection at the @cacollegeofarts library.

I'm taking a papermaking class with @juliaannegoodman this semester and she had @ccalibraries staff show us this three volume book, along with other handmade + artist edition books held in their very special collection.

Since the announcement that CCA will be closing next year, not only will ~500 people lose their jobs - all of the schools property, including our studio tools, art making equipment, our archives and our library - are being sold to Vanderbilt University. There is no assurance these resources will be used for teaching the next generation of artists and designers after ownership is transferred to Vanderbilt.

In light of the recent @sfchronicle article, the closure and this immense loss to the Bay Area art community is the result a long series of irresponsible decisions made by the people who were entrusted with leading our school + community over the past ~10 years.

This book is one among rare many cultural artifacts and collections that are begin lost in a real estate deal that @danielluriesf declared "a win" for SF.

The final photo shows students protesting the treatment of our 120 year old school as a commodity, organized by the CCA's Unions that have been fighting this for a long time. I'm so proud of these students for standing up to speak their minds.

New carved ceramic piece in progress >

Not sure if I'm just channeling wood grain patterns or something deeper, but I can say that this work requires intense focus, and carving these forms becomes almost meditative. Which feels grounding when so much else in daily life feels distracting and chaotic.

Remnant (mirrors) presented by @worksinprogress_sf x FOG Design+Art @fogfair

From the remnants of the 40' long old growth redwood I have been working with for well over a year, I carved these wall mirrors. Every off-cut piece of this wood holds a piece of the history of this majestic tree, and I hope to see it used in artworks far and wide. Reach out if you'd like an off cut piece to work with in your own hands/process.

Flip through and you'll see the the process in reverse - finishing > carved and sanded > rough cut shapes > bucking the log > clay models > and the concept sketch. And finally the lovely CCA(C) crew that helped pull the marketplace together.

How does an old growth redwood log weighing over 6000 lbs end up in an urban plaza in Downtown Oakland?

With a very big crane and a lot of help 🏗

This project has been a 2+ year journey and so many people contributed. The art community works like an organism with many moving parts and branches that connect across fields of expertise.

From @arborica_ca the wood matchmaker, I sourced this salvaged old growth redwood log up in Tomales Bay. @o2aa.oakland, a wonderful creative community in West Oakland provided space and support to complete the carving along with @hudsonfinecarving and his chainsaws. @bartontroutman is an expert mover of heavy things and a very skilled installer. @dorka1 helped managed and coordinate the entire project from start to its completion. @samuelmerrittu has been a wonderful client. @cityoak_arts_culture has supported from the City of Oakland. @1amprojects took on the painting of the plaza ground.

The creative community in the Bay is navigating an uncertain future with the announcement of the imminent closing of CCA(C) @cacollegeofarts where I began my career as an artist oh-so-long ago. More on that later.

But for today, we can celebrate the opening of this new plaza artwork and building in beautiful downtown Oakland (the ribbon cutting celebration is at 2pm) and I am so honored to have a publicly accessible artwork in this City which I love dearly. taken in Samuel Merritt University by @adriensegal

Humboldt Crossing is (almost) officially open!

My most recent public art project centers around a 30' long salvaged old growth redwood log I spent the better part of 2025 carving into a sculptural bench. Below on the plaza ground is a painted graphic based on LIDAR maps showing the historic paths of a California river.

The plaza is part of Samuel Merritt University's new campus in the heart of Downtown Oakland (Broadway & 12th St.) The official opening for the building (with ribbon cutting ceremony and all) will happen later this month.
