Twenty-five years ago, a climbing trip in Yosemite sparked an idea that would become Adventure Sports Journal.

There was no business plan—just a belief that California's human-powered outdoor community deserved a magazine dedicated to its stories, adventures and wild places.

Twenty-five years later, we're incredibly grateful to the writers, photographers, advertisers, distributors and readers who have made this journey possible.

We recently shared the story behind ASJ—from our humble beginnings to where we are today. We hope you'll take a few minutes to read it via the link in our bio.

If ASJ has been part of your adventures over the years, we'd love to hear your favorite memory in the comments. Thank you for being part of our community! ❤️ by @adventuresportsjournal

Gray wolves are back in California — and scientists are working to better understand how they move across the landscape.

CDFW recently collared five wolves from the Whaleback and Harvey packs in Northern California, gathering critical data on health, habitat use, and migration patterns. These images offer a rare behind-the-scenes look at how wildlife monitoring actually happens.

Just an hour north of LA, Oxnard moves at a slower, saltier pace — and for freedivers and spearfishers, it’s the gateway to one of California’s wildest marine playgrounds. 🌊

From Channel Islands Harbor, it’s a straight shot to Anacapa Island, part of Channel Islands National Park and often called the “Galápagos of North America.” Think crystal-clear water, thriving kelp forests, dramatic drop-offs, and an old-school ocean experience that feels worlds away from the mainland.

Whether you’re chasing your first legal fish, drifting through kelp with sea lions, or paddling sea caves post-dive, Oxnard is the ideal launch point for Channel Islands adventure — with easy access via Island Packers, plus relaxed beaches, great food, and gear-friendly stays back on shore.

🤿 From spear to shore, this is California diving at its finest.

Bear Valley Mountain Resort—1,900’ of vertical, 1,680 acres to roam, iconic laps through Grizzly Bowl, and some of the best views in the Sierra from the top of Monte Wolfe and National. Add in improved shuttles, refreshed lodges, upgraded terrain parks… and yes, California’s only Bear Cat (one of just two in the entire country), serving slope side tacos every weekend. 🌮⛷️

Redding might just be Northern California’s most underrated winter base camp. While storms stack up in the high country, the town stays rideable—offering stacked single track, river trails, foothill runs, and easy access to snow when you want it 🏔️

And when your legs are cooked? The local beer scene is ready to reward the effort. Because here, the formula is simple: earn your adventure, earn your beer 🍻

With such a moderate winter we are missing chest deep powder days but are grateful to have the opportunity to get out and do some warmer-weather sports like trail running, biking, and of course climbing!

In Issue #138 Chris Van Leuven shared Justin Olsen’s story: He came to Yosemite valley in 2016 without having ever ascended a rope, had never shot from a hanging belay, and never envisioned himself in the middle of Yosemite’s climbing scene.

Four years later, Olsen had photographed some of the most accomplished climbers of his generation — Kevin Jorgeson on a new El Capitan-scale free route on Higher Cathedral Spire, Sasha DiGiulian on an unrepeated El Cap free climb, Molly Mitchell dancing across a delicate granite face — and had carved out a reputation for capturing the Valley’s vertical life from the inside.
