The agenda for the 2026 #ParrotCrisis Summit is set.

Join us November 12-13 on Zoom to hear frontline conservationists and parrot guardians from Australia, China, Colombia, Honduras, India, Mexico, Uganda, New Zealand, and more share why parrots are disappearing from the wild and suffering in captivity around the world.

We'll also hear first-hand from colleagues at @worldanimalprotectionus and @peta about their investigations into parrot mills, a highly unregulated industry causing immeasurable pain and suffering -- and sourcing birds for basically every pet store in the U.S.

Parrots are in crisis. They need people like you to protect them. Whoever you are, wherever you are, you can make a difference. There's no time to wait.

Register now at parrotalliance.org or visit the link in bio. Please share this post with your networks!

Take action for trafficked and mill-bred animals 🦜 Send an email to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors to let them know that you want to see a ban on the sale of all retail animals in San Francisco👇

Email: board.of.supervisors@sfgov.org

Sample email:

Dear San Francisco Board of Supervisors,

I am in strong support of the San Francisco Animal Commission’s recommendation that San Francisco introduce a ban on the cruel and unnecessary retail sale of animals in San Francisco.

Thanks to @socialcompassion California successfully banned the sale of mill-bred dogs, cats, and rabbits back in 2017 through the Pet Rescue and Adoption Act (AB 485). Now, SF has the opportunity to extend this protection to other animals sold in pet stores and inspire other cities to do the same.

Retail animals are often trafficked from the wild and many die during importation, making this a crucial conservation issue. Retail animals who are not trafficked are bred in mills, where they are confined in deplorable conditions. Whether these animals are stolen from the wild or bred in mills, there is mass suffering that exists within the pet industry.

As a progressive and conservation-oriented city, San Francisco cannot continue to support the suffering of animals in breeding mills, in trafficking incidents, and in pet stores themselves.

I urge the Board of Supervisors to introduce a ban on the retail sale of animals in San Francisco. Thank you for your consideration. by @advocateforbirds

Most people don't realize that the legal #parrot trade in the global north harms #parrots where they fly free.

Every time a #bird is legally bought or sold somewhere like the U.S. or Europe, the "value" of that species trickles down to where they fly free. That "value" presents an opportunity to humans who otherwise struggle to make ends meet.

As long as we continue to commodify these animals, that economic opportunity will lead to trapping and trafficking. International regulation does protect wild animals, but parrots are still trapped and trafficked across borders every day. If a parrot is seized at a border, they are more often than not euthanized.

Parrots are imported *legally* by breeding groups as well -- in the name of "diversifying genetic stock" for bird mills (which invariably end up in suffering in pet stores).

The IAPP envisions a world where #birds are no longer bred, bought or sold. Only when wild animals are respected as sentient beings -- not products -- will all birds, everywhere, be safe from the harmful effects of the pet trade.

Join the #ParrotCrisis Action Summit on Friday, September 19 to learn how you can help protect parrots -- whoever you are, wherever you are.

There's no way to sugar-coat it. #Parrot Breeding is out of control. Breeders in the U.S. alone hatch an estimated 2 to 5 million parrots each year. Additionally, around 15,000 parrots are legally imported annually -- in the name of "diversifying genetic stock." This despite the fact that rescues are full of #parrots in need of homes.

Many parrots are lucky enough to end up living long, happy, healthy lives. But many more fall through the cracks -- and plenty experience both. 20, 30, 50 years of love and care, followed by tragedy when they are inevitably failed by humans -- even the most loving guardians struggle with life changes, financial struggles, or poor health. And parrots pay the price.

Rescues are the end of the line for so many parrots failed by humans. But they're all full. There's no more room. Not enough staff. Never enough money. Yet the surrender requests never cease -- and in fact are only growing by the year. This is the #ParrotCrisis.

Sanctuaries and rescues are begging, pleading to anyone who will listen -- if you love parrots, never breed or buy one. Adopt, don't shop. Never support a system that commodifies wild animals, prioritizing profit over welfare.

To learn how you can help captive parrots and the rescues that care for them, join us on September 19 for the #ParrotCrisis Action Summit. Register now at parrotalliance.org and share this post!
