I did this instead of working on the Secret Project. You're welcome.

Unsurprisingly, much love is due to @capsreadz and @jamesmeccaauthor, superior memers and perpetual inspirations.

What's it like losing a God?

There's something very exciting coming soon from @jamesmeccaauthor, and I'm elated to kick off the scavenger hunt of hints. 👀

...

"The Veil is infinite; its pines a prison.

For one and a quarter, the moon has not changed, and the sun not risen. All paths are lost. The beast cannot escape. The wood won't let it.

It is not alone.

The Veil is infinite; its pines her prison."

...

Keep an eye out on @theabandonedbookshelf and @mellibtwnpages for the next two hints, and check out @jamesmeccaauthor for the final reveal on Friday 10/16!

"Apparently, deciding to break a millennium-long curse had legal requirements..."

✨OUT NOW✨

I was promised a regency-era y2k Barbie fairy film, and that's exactly what I got! I really enjoyed the tongue-in-cheek humor and found this to be a fun romp. If anything, I wish the author had committed to the bit even harder---I would have loved to see the omniscient POV for more than a few sparkling moments!

Iris is a fun main character. She's well meaning, capable in all the ways that make sense, and well written...and painfully, humorously ditzy at times. Pure of heart and dumb of ass...you know the drill... And Sunny? Oh Sunny, you sweet sweet boy. How I adore him.

Overall, I had a great time! This was a very promising indie debut, and I'm excited to see what's next for the author.

Thank you to the author for the ARC!!!

I started a commonplace book in September, and I love the practice so much. I've always kept some sort of journal or notebook. In high school and college it was bullet journals, the last few years I've kept everything journals, and even a D&D character journal, but I wanted this to be a more encyclopedic, aesthetic collection of topics that I've been researching/thinking about/read/watched lately. It's been so fun, and so satisfying to see how my style has evolved over just a short period of time.

Do you journal? What types of journals do you keep?

Andrea Gibson was an American poet and activist, and the Poet Laureate of Colorado. Sadly I only started reading their works after they passed last year, but they're well worth the read. A difficult life is not less worth living than a gentle one.

How long will I keep up with this new series? 🤷🏼

I finished a lot of books this week that I'd been slowly working on for a while. How to Fish is fun friendslop (if my spouse catches another surprise shark I'm gonna surprise HIM with a shark). ReStory is SUPER cute and great for destressing or playing while you listen to an audiobook. Watched some interesting video essays as well, and made progress on the Secret Project (mainly editing!).

What's been the highlight of your week so far?

I want to share more poems that move me. I think I will make a weekly habit of it.

Rilke is one I got really into last year, reading whole collections. His works tend toward mysticism, and inspire me to see the beauty in the world and in life. They're antidotes to despair, something we all need at the moment.

Have you read any Rilke before? Do you have a favorite?

September!! Somehow everything went wrong in September in so many ways and we're still dealing with all that (family crisis, etc) but despite everything it was still a good month. I wrote a lot and remembered that I actually love writing it's not all suffering for the sake of art, ate a lot of good food, saw and commissioned good art, read some good books.

I'm really craving the cooler temps of fall, though I've failed to summon them with my fall-ish reading this month. Soon? I hope? 🤞🤞

What are you looking forward to in October?

"I don't crave death, but gods, some days I am so very tired of living."

I was so fortunate to receive an ARC of this, one of my most anticipated books this year. T. Kingfisher captures Astarion's voice so perfectly, and does great justice to the Szarr "family" dynamic. Surviving under an abuser like that changes a person, and changes how you interact with the other people you're stuck with. I really enjoyed seeing those dynamics at play. Often, you don't realize who you really are and how you really feel about what you endured until you've spent some time on the other side---this is not the Astarion we see in game, and I appreciate that this gives us a look into just how far he's come processing his trauma by the middle of BG3.

Writing media tie-ins, especially ones that are so anticipated, and ones that are intended as prequels, is challenging work. There were a few lore changes I wished hadn't been made, but it's my understanding those were done at the request of Wizards of the Coast. While I don't think it was the right decision, I don't hold it against Kingfisher. Ultimately, it was a fun (and dark, and heartbreaking) look at the character's history. Would definitely recommend to other fans of BG3---though with that disclaimer about lore changes, as I know some folks might have a harder time getting past that.

I've read quite a few essays this month--- they're wonderful ways to seek out bite-sized wisdom, or to introduce yourself to a topic. Here's 5 that I've loved lately!

Octavia E. Butler - A Few Rules for Predicting the Future

This short essay talks about the inspiration behind her novels, and encourages readers to study history and take action to create the future they want.

Ursula K. Le Guin - The carrier bag theory of fiction

What if the earliest, greatest tools our ancestors made weren't weapons, but containers? How would fiction change if we saw these (the basket that carries food, the medicine bag), rather than weapons, as symbols of humanity?

Audre Lorde - The master's tools will never dismantle the master's house

A short, insightful look at the power and necessity of intersectional feminism, and of embracing our differences to work toward a common goal.

I picked this one up after seeing @unfocusedcuriosity recommend it! 🫶🏻

Ursula K. Le Guin - Conversations on Writing

Not truly an essay, this is a transcript of several interviews with Le Guin about the craft of writing. Perfect if you're hoping for insight into how she writes, or seeking motivation for your own writing practice.

Thom James Carter - They came to slay: the queer culture of D&D

Part history of D&D, part exploration of queer joy and resistance, this essay is for anyone who has found missing parts of themselves at the table, or anyone who's curious about that experience.

Also, this copy was a gift from the lovely @teaandcosyreads ! 🫶🏻 by @aeb_reads
