Wednesday is, quite literally, Woden's Day! Named for the god of wisdom, divine inspiration and the mysteries of the runes - mid-week is the time to make an offering, cast the runes and seek his counsel. A Wōdensdæg ritual: I burn juniper to clear the space and offer mugwort as a smoke offering. An Os (ᚩ - Woden's rune) is carved into a red candle to mark his presence, then dressed seven times in honor of the seven worlds and to enhance the ritual further. I also include tiger’s eye for grounding and to honor his all-seeing eyes. With the space prepared, I invite Woden by calling his name and stating clearly why I approach him: Wōden, victory-giver, All-Knower, master of runes, On this Wōdensdæg, I call your name and seek your all-seeing eyes. Guide my steps through the unseen and light the road I must tread, Receive this offering poured in good will. May gift be met with gift, if you so will it. I then cast the runes to receive his counsel but often just a meditation followed by an offering is enough. The gift of mead is then poured into the earth to give thanks. This is a simple ritual that centres and helps me refocus, especially when I'm feeling distracted and uninspired like we all do by midweek! Save this post to try next Wednesday ᚹ•ᚩ•ᛞ•ᛖ•ᚾ #wednesday #woden #witchcraft #ritual #pagan by @aelihte_
October has arrived and that means, so has storm season 🌩️ When the air grows thick and heavy, you know þunor is riding the sky in his chariot ready to wreak havoc. And while it can be intimidating, it is HIS storm and it’s not for us to dare command him to stop. Instead to mark his passage across the sky, I burn juniper as an offering, paired with a charm asking his favour to shield my home and those in it, and let his fury pass us by. Mighty Thunnor, turn thy tempest, shield this stead. Stay thy fierce hammer, from this hearth and home. þunor, wergendra waldend, wrec þā wræca aweg. (Thunor, ruler of protectors, drive the tempests away) This charm is my own, written in the same old spirit, not a historical text. ᛟ•ᛝ•ᛉ #paganism #hearthmagic #fyrnsidu #folkmagic #saxonpaganism by @aelihte_
Spring Equinox 🌸 Today, wherever you are on Earth, the Sun reaches the equinox, when day and night come into balance. Here in the Southern Hemisphere the light is well and truly back with the days lengthening and the earth waking up again. For those who follow the old ways, the turnings of the year and the festivals attached to them are an important part of our practice. The Sun, Moon, land, sea, sky and seasons are not just 'things' around us, but are PART of us, and our ancestors who came before us. They should absolutely be celebrated, whether there are surviving records of doing so, or not. So today, I'll mark the turning of the season by tending the garden, cleansing and blessing my home, cooking and making offerings to my ancestors and local wihts. I'll honour Eorðe, our blessed mother earth, for what she provided over winter and what she will continue to give as the growing season begins, and I'll honour Ēostre. While she isn't a goddess of the equinox, we are now in Ēostremōnaþ, the month named for her, making it a fitting time to make an offering and speak her name - she absolutely won't begrudge a gift! Wishing you all a peaceful and balanced Equinox, wherever you are in the world. ᛞ • ᛄ #fyrnsidu #anglosaxonpaganism #springequinox #eostremonath #witch by @aelihte_
Ēostremōnaþ has begun 💛 The currawongs have returned and so have the bees, it’s time to rip open the windows, tend the garden, prepare the hearth and gather the family to feast in honor of the Goddess Ēostre. Spring does ask for a little more of us than most seasons and after the droll of Winter I’m quite happy to oblige particularly at Ēostremōnaþ when I have the most energy. That means getting the garden properly underway, planting seeds, weeding, fertilising, tending what survived winter (NOTHING), putting the hot water bottles away, making an offering to Ēostre, baking many many things and getting the house ready for a proper spring feast. Basically, the garden gets attention, the hearth gets some love and I get to eat alot! Happy Ēostremōnaþ 💛 #fyrnsidu #eostremonath #anglosaxonheathenry #heathenry #anglosaxonpaganism #paganism #eostre #witchcraft #spring by @aelihte_
House wights are spirits of the home that keep the household peaceful, healthy and in order...as long as you keep them onside! We've been in our home ten years now and I know what they like - and what they don't. Respected, they bring good fortune. Neglected, they'll blow up the dishwasher! So tonight, a simple cake offering to keep them onside: By hearth and home, this gift I bring, to wights unseen and spirits within, a gift for a gift, I gladly pay, guard this house by night and day. I know they'll keep good watch over our home and MAY even return a missing sock or two... This charm is my own, written in the same old spirit, not a historical text. #paganism #hearthmagic #witch #folkmagic #anglosaxonpaganism by @aelihte_
Elbow-deep in clay this weekend, tidying up before the next firing. Rune sets, bowls, incense bowls - all still raw at this stage, but you can see where they're headed. More soon 🔥 #potterystudio #AngloSaxonPaganism #witchwares #folkmagic #clay by @aelihte_
This month is Sōlmōnaþ, the month before spring when pagan Anglo-Saxons made offerings of cakes to the gods. The month name is translated from Sol, a type of hearth cake, and Mōnaþ, meaning month. Which gods received the offerings isnt known, though Ing would make the most sense being the god of fertility and agriculture and planting season just around the corner. For our house, Sōlmōnaþ is about flinging open the windows and planning my spring garden that I'll likely over water. It's been a long winter of coughs, colds and half-dead plants and I'm ready for the first warm breeze to thaw our bones and bring us back to life. Plus cake!? Yessity yes. I'll be baking this weekend leaving some for the house wights and offering one to Ing requesting a good harvest ahead - I'm gonna need it! #Sōlmōnaþ #AngloSaxonPaganism #folkmagic #paganism by @aelihte_
Today I really needed something to move... well, more like shoved forward, and fast! Ur, Rad, Wynn. Strength, direction and joy in that order. Before speaking the charm, I named what I needed, clearly and specifically, nothing vague like "success," but the actual thing. Then the Galdor spoken as one rather than three separate charms for each rune, to bind them together for this working. Ur, wild strength, untamed Ox that sleeps in me, arise to your feet Rad, ride swift and strong along the high road , carry me to (the thing I've named) Wynn, let only joy be born from this deed. Power, to path, to prize. By flame that burns and stone that stays, so it is said, so it is made. A pinch of mugwort and betony onto the flame as an offering and to clear the path, then let the flame burn down to extinguish. That's it, short and simple - I even used a birthday cake candle because I needed this working to be fast! ᚢ•ᚱ•ᚹ This charm is my own, written in the same old spirit, not a historical text. #paganism #galdor #futhorc #runicmagic #AngloSaxonPaganism by @aelihte_
The Anglo-Saxon word for moon is Mōna. The direct root of our word moon, as well as month, and even Monday (literally "Mōna's day"!). In Anglo-Saxon tradition, Mōna was the god of night and time, driving his horse-drawn chariot across the night sky, pulling the tides and marking the passage of time and seasons. Tonight, I'm setting out water, runes, crystals and my silver jewellery to sit under the open night sky, catching Mōnas light and charging it under his gaze. If youre also setting anything out under the moon tonight, speak this charm as you lay them down: Mōna, these I lay before you, wæter, stān, and seolfor. Cold star of the night. Lēoma! Seolfor to shine, Stān to store, Wæter to wake. Charge them through this night, Hold them till I rise. (Lēoma is the Anglo-Saxon word for the gleam or radiance coming off something -pronounced roughly "LAY-oh-ma"). This charm is my own, written in the same old spirit, not a historical text. Save this charm for your next full moon 🌕 #fullmoon #paganism #witch #theoldways by @aelihte_
Mugwort is the first herb named in the Anglo-Saxon Nine Herbs Charm written over a thousand years ago. Our ancestors called her Una, the oldest of herbs. Mugwort has many powers from aiding digestion, and easing cramps to protection and most famously for vivid dreaming, mugwort holds ancient medicine, cræft and magic. But harvest her carelessly and you get a plant. Harvest her rightly and wake her with words, and you get her true cræft (power). Iron is believed to disrupt a plant's spirit so don't use steel or standard scissors when harvesting. Instead, simply gather Una by hand with bare fingers. As you do, speak this galdor aloud and again as you steep, sprinkle or burn her: Una, oldest of Wyrts, wake and rise. Root to root, leaf to leaf, I release you. This charm is my own, written in the same old spirit, not a historical text. Below is from the original mugwort incantation from the Nine Herbs Charm: Remember, mugwort, what you made known, what you declared at Regenmelde. You are called Una, the oldest of herbs. You have power against three and against thirty, you have power against poison and against infection, you have power against the loathsome foe roving through the land. Save this for the next time you use Mugwort in your practice. #AngloSaxonPaganism #folkmagic #witch #pagan #mugwort by @aelihte_
Flame scrying is one of the oldest forms of divination. Long before cards or leaves or runes, people sat by the hearth and let the fire answer their deepest questions and offer up its prophecies. Æled is the Anglo-Saxon word for fire. Speak this charm aloud as you watch the flames, and notice how they move, where they lean, how high they climb, what colour they turn. What do you see? This charm is my own, written in that same old spirit, not a historical text. Save this one for your next quiet night by the fire 🔥 #AngloSaxonPaganism #celticpaganism #folklore #witch #firedivination by @aelihte_
It's arrived!! My official @witches.of.scotland tartan came today all the way from the Scottish Highlands and it's now officially my most prized possession. Created as a living tribute to the thousands of women targeted, tortured and lost to history, honestly wearing this feels like wrapping myself in the arms of my ancestors. I wear this tartan proudly to honor their memory, their spirit and to remember their suffering. We are still here and are stronger because of them. Thank you @witches.of.scotland for keeping their stories alive and for the incredible work you're doing to ensure they aren't forgotten. Unapologetic and 100% a #quarrelsomedame 🖤♥️🤍🩶 #witch #witchcraft #witchesofscotland by @aelihte_
