Review || It never ceases to amaze me how much Constantin Brâncuși’s sculptures draw me in. Their radical reduction to the essential, the clarity of their forms, and the tranquility they convey continue to fascinate me.

The Neue Nationalgalerie’s @neuenationalgalerie retrospective, organized with the Centre Pompidou @centrepompidou and presenting more than 150 works, is the first major Brâncuși exhibition in Germany in over fifty years.

Encountering the pieces in Mies van der Rohes vast, open hall is powerful, but the architecture’s monumental openness also creates tensions. Some works thrive in the shifting light and generous space, while others seem to struggle for intimacy.

Still, the show’s thematic structure beautifully reveals Brâncuși’s persistent return to key motifs - The Kiss, Bird, the Sleeping Muse - each variation a further distillation.

The partial reconstruction of his Paris studio is the exhibition’s most compelling moment: a concentrated, almost intimate environment that captures how deeply Brâncuși understood his sculptures as relational and spatial.

The power of his work remains undeniable. The Berlin retrospective offers both newcomers and longtime admirers a profound encounter with one of modern sculpture’s essential voices.

When I founded Aesence nearly ten years ago, I could never have imagined where this project would lead or how many inspiring people I would get to meet through it.

Your messages and the conversations with you mean the world to me. I’m really looking forward to the upcoming year, as I’ve been working on a special, collaborative project for some time now that I’ll soon be able to share more about 🤫.

Until then, I look forward to many more inspiring interviews, exhibitions, amazing people and minimalist art.

Thank you for being a part of it. 🤍

Sarah

Before I began my research into the color black, I quickly realized that this article would require a different approach than usual and that my research would be much more extensive than I had initially anticipated. But in order to delve deeper into the multifaceted meaning of black and better understand the complexity of this “non-color,” we need to focus on both the symbolic interpretations and the historical and cultural context.

In Western culture, the color black is often associated with darkness, fear, melancholy, and emptiness. Yet in black monochrome painting it can become something else: a field of possibility, stillness, and heightened perception.

From Malevich, Reinhardt or Newman to contemporary artists like Djeric-Hunold, Kapoor or Gerritz - the color black opens up a space beyond representation.

How we perceive a black painting depends on the symbolism we attach to it. Depending on our own personal perspectives, black can unsettle us - or become a meditative space that invites us inward.

Some time ago I spoke with Spanish artist Maria Yelletisch @mariayelletisch about her work.

She described her art as an exploration of landscapes, repetition, and emotion - shaped by her deep connection to nature and her sensitivity to the recurring patterns that surround us.

Repetition plays a central role in her practice, not only as a visual element, but as a meditative act.

Yvonne Willemse (b. 1967) @yvonne.willemse is a contemporary Dutch artist who lives and works in Breda. Her mostly monochrome, small-format works are characterized by a minimalist and geometric aesthetic.

Her creative process often begins with a self-written short story, which inspires her to explore spatial constructions and use them as a starting point for her work.

Initially, she creates collages, relying entirely on her intuition. She then develops some of these collages into oil paintings on wood or drawings on paper.

Earlier this year, I had the opportunity to interview the Japanese painter Hideaki Yamanobe. Known for his monochrome, meditative paintings, Yamanobe explores depth, perception, and the subtle resonance between material and emptiness.

In the interview, the artist told me about his early journey into art, the fusion of Western and Asian philosophies in his work, and the physical and mental rituals behind his painting process.
