Issue 3: Rooms with a View out now
POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
Issue 3 of AFM is almost here. The title of this issue is “Rooms with a View”: We drew up walls, set a ceiling, and then stepped back, letting our contributors fill in the rest.

Our theme is interiors and interiorities: the spaces, shelters, and structures (literal or otherwise) that hold our days, lives, thoughts, and moods. Inside, you’ll find essays by philosophers, conversations between authors and provocateurs, fiction, photography, and poetry that pull back the covers, rearrange the furniture, and set the whole house on fire with their ideas, arguments, and stories.

This time, we have four cover stars: Amia Srinivasan (@amia.srinivasan), Marf Summers (@marfsummers), James Ivory (@mipfilms), and an art cover by painter Nicole Eisenman (@nicoleeisenman). Each of them welcomed us in and brought us inside, from the studio to homes real or remembered.

Preorder Issue 3, on newsstands September 21st, at the link in bio.

We share a lot with our neighbors–more, if you live in a Brooklyn railroad apartment divided up by flimsy partitions. “We listened to our neighbors going through their days and we understood that they must hear us, too, our conversations and our sex. Did we fascinate them or did we bother them,” wonders @unit01barbie.

For AFM Issue 3, Kay Gabriel explores how we’re at once uncomfortably intimate and remarkably distant from those who live closest to us. Read “Thin Walls” in print, or online at the link in bio.

Siri Hustvedt and Sheila Heti–two of the most reflective writers today on the contortions of interiority–met in Hustvedt’s home in Brooklyn for a conversation on love, marriage, grief, and the self.

The two ostensibly met to discuss @sirihustvedt’s latest book, “Ghost Stories,” her memoir of the year following the death of her husband, Paul Auster. But from there, the two drilled down on the threads between desire and art, from falling in love as a writer to the lacuna of the erotic in literature.

ACL Weekend 2 at Carpenter with @af_ckingmagazine

Issue 3 is a visual gem and a multilayered read. Centered on the theme of interiors, it ventures well beyond the expected: through fiction, essays, and visual work, its contributors push the theme to the limits of interpretation.

Come check it out today and tomorrow at our activation and will find its way to the shop this upcoming week. by @af_ckingmagazine

In Julianne Moore’s Safe (1995), “Moore plays two characters in one body, Carol and the thing inside,” writes @sarahnicoleprickett. Todd Haynes’s film has been endlessly dissected and diagnosed. But has anyone considered, as Prickett does in her essay for AFM Issue 3, that Carol is an alien?

From that one observation emerges an examination of aliens in every sense of the word, exploding from Carol to California’s 1913 Alien Land Law, UFOs at the 1984 LA Olympics, and Prickett’s own experience of illness in the desert.

Is your therapist even listening? Are they taken away by your impressive self-awareness?

For Issue 3 of AFM, we’re thrilled to share @sonomar’s fiction debut, an excerpt from his unpublished novel, “Cope.” A fiction in words and images, the story explores the self-obsessed and performative experience of Zoom therapy from both sides.

The photographs—long exposure shots of films like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “A Woman Under the Influence”—depict women, undone by domestic space.

“Before mass incarceration, the cell was a place entered into voluntarily. Desire sent you there,” writes @jo__livingstone.

Reflecting at the @metcloisters, Livingstone takes us through a series of medieval enclosures: from the cell to the cloister and finally, to the body.

Of course Amia Srinivasan, feminist philosopher, leading thinker on sex, and author of “The Right to Sex,” is also secretly excellent at something else: surfing.

In “Home, Sick,” her cover essay for Issue 3: Rooms with a View, @amia.srinivasan shows us the pleasures–and perils–of being read by others, whether by family, friends, or in psychoanalysis. As only she can do, Srinivasan peels back the interiority and intimacy underpinning the theoretical, showing us the relationship between the two.

For this cover shoot, Srinivasan was photographed by @kobewagstaff, who followed her for a full day of surfing off the coast of Southern California.

For AFM’s first art cover, we’re delighted to feature Nicole Eisenman’s painting Is it So (2014), reflecting our interiors theme for Issue 3: Rooms with a View. @nicoleeisenman contributed an original painting for this issue, accompanying an essay by @sarahnicoleprickett on Safe (1995), with Julianne Moore.

Get a first look at the painting, Movie Poster (2026), in the print edition of Issue 3. As a special gift, we’ve also included a poster-sized print of the painting inside every issue, for you to have and display and hold.

Order your copy and read Sarah Nicole Prickett’s essay at the link in bio.
