āœ… Handed over. I'm Sam, your new Union Affairs Officer for 26/27 taking over from Lewis!

😁 I'm really excited to get stuck in when everyone is back on campus, and I'll be plotting and scheming over Summer which I'm excited for you to see the fruits of...

As a reminder of what I stand for:

✊ A stronger political voice at the Union

šŸ’ø Aggressive cost of living action - on buses, Circuit Laundry, and bursaries

šŸ“œ And strengthening student rights by introducing a Student Rights Charter at York

I'm also keen to focus on improving nighttime safety, introducing a multilingual hiring policy at York, and expanding the student pantry

Let's make York fairer for all - together. ✊ by @affairsyorksu

Turnitin has agreed to rewrite the EULA that would have originally allowed them to use student submitted work to train AI. This is a massive win for the campaign - thank you to all of you and student leaders across the country for making so much noise about this.

Now we need to have a conversation with students about what the terms of service should look like - they should protect students work and introduce meaningful opt in consent for processing work.

I look forward to meeting with @turnitinco to discuss how we move forward. by @affairsyorksu

I welcome this commitment to rewrite the problematic EULA changes proposed by Turnitin. But there is still no clear path forward WITH students whose work will be affected regardless of what these new terms look like.

I call on @turnitinco to meet with me and other student leaders to shape the future of student intellectual property, and for UK Universities including @uniofyork to publicly call for policies that would place irrevocable rights in the hands of students to have final say on if and how their student work is reproduced outside of simple assessment.

In Europe, students own their work. In the UK, we don’t. That needs to change. by @affairsyorksu

Turnitin sells universities tools to catch students using AI. This summer, it changed its terms so it could use their essays to train AI.
慤
Most UK university students can't opt out. Submitting work through Turnitin is often a condition of being marked.
慤
After students' unions across the UK pushed back, Turnitin paused the change until September 2027. But a pause isn't a promise.

You can sign the petitions at the link in bio if you agree Turnitin shouldn’t use student work to train AI. Laptop with Turnitin logo and text about AI training on essays. by @affairsyorksu

Turnitin & AI update šŸ¤–

We were on the BBC and CNN!

The Uni of York has responded, and have confirmed that York students data will NOT be used to train AI at this time. We are meeting with them soon to work through the details of what the future holds as Turnitin looks to confirm changes for September 2027. They’ve agreed to REVIEW the agreement with Turnitin if those terms change.

This isn’t just about Turnitin. It’s about the fundamental right to your intellectual and physical labour. Other countries in Europe codify rights to student work - the UK does not. And as fundamental questions and anxieties arise over who benefits and who loses out from AI, It’s clearer now than ever that we need leadership on AI.

I’m calling on Universities to step up to fill that space, and the government to draw red lines on who benefits from AI. AI is trained on HUMAN CREATION. Therefore it should be us, not gargantuan American AI companies, that benefit from it. by @affairsyorksu

Turnitin, the system Universities use to mark work and check it for AI and plagiarism have proposed changing their terms of service to allow them to use student submitted work to train AI. This is completely unacceptable.

Your work belongs to you. AI companies don’t get to have free reign over people’s intellectual property, and there are profound implications for academic integrity if your work is used to train AI.

That’s why we’ve written to the PVC for Education and Students to ask them to review the Uni’s relationship with Turnitin, and I’m really pleased that they have agreed to meet us to discuss this important issue.

We’ll keep you updated and it’s been amazing to see the support from students, SUs, and University staff in tackling irresponsible use of AI. by @affairsyorksu

Today, we wrote to the PVC for Education about Turnitin’s deeply concerning proposal to use student submitted work to train AI models.

What’s happened? Turnitin is a software tool used by Universities across the world to detect AI use in student work and check for plagiarism. In August, Times Higher Education reported on proposed changes to their terms of service that would allow them to use student work to train their AI models.

This is wrong. AI companies should not get free rein over students intellectual property. And furthermore, there are incredible risks for student work to be uploaded outside of the University ecosystem. Southampton University recently dropped the software company citing these moral, ethical, and data protection concerns.

We are therefore urgently meeting with University staff to discuss what we can do to make sure students’ intellectual property is protected.

Welcome to York! We’re the Sabbs and we’ll be kicking about over move in weekend and we can’t wait to meet you all.

Who are we? Well we’re Sabbatical Officers - Sabbs for short. We’re former students at the University who were elected to run the Students Union and run campaigns to make student life better.

In the past we’ve successfully campaigned against rent increases, student bus cancellations, University accommodation failures, access to Uni spaces and we also run events celebrating our diverse student body.

We all take on different responsibilities which you can read about in this post.

Take a scroll through to read more about us and what we do - as well as where you can find us over the move in weekend.
