6 MOIS !

6 MONTHS!

We present the three protos behind proto studio:

Lina (@lina___tsss)
Nico (@eautraitee_________)
Cai (@caidpie)

For the past 6 months, proto studio has been taking its first breaths of air, its first laughs and its first (dance) steps. Our mission is becoming clearer as we meet new people and build a community with, around, through and thanks to the studio.

We’re working hard in the clouds of Mile End to offer you a space to gather, to reflect, to research and to emancipate through dance and simply being together.

Thanks to all those who helped us build this dream venue. It takes a village! Thank you for following us, supporting us and trusting us!

ā€œHow do we have each other’s backs?ā€

Two Deaf performers, one from Edmonton and one from Montréal, try to answer this through a performance of movement, visuals, and signed poetry. Connor and Cai search for answers with their bodies, hands, and breath in a rare portrayal of Deaf identity, vulnerability, and solidarity.

Dorsal Traces deconstructs and unifies many themes important to the Deaf community - Deaf dorsality, Queerness, toxic masculinity, and the need for male Deaf role models who support each other - and fail - and keep trying.

Dorsal Traces premieres on December 3rd, 2026, at 7:00pm. Tickets for all four performances are on sale now, and Invisible Members can get a $5 discount on theirs! Just check our link in bio or go directly to our website at www.invisiblepractice.ca.

We’re proud to present this brand-new work as part of Good Women Dance’s Convergence 2026 double bill. Your ticket gets you TWO live performances, not just one!

Oh mother, oh brother

Thank you @milezerodance and the Magpie Collection for such a invigorating festival. I loved the intimacy and the connection that was built between artists and the public and am so thankful to have been able to share my work with this community. Merci!!!!

Collaboration. Intuition. Trust.

Those are some of the themes our participants explored together during our second community workshop. If you couldn’t make it, we hope you can join us this autumn!

Deaf Dorsality is human connection. It is solidarity. It is, perhaps, a cure to some things that affect our society today. And it all comes together in Dorsal Traces, a Deaf duet performance premiering this December.

This week of rehearsal and community engagement was made possible with funding from Edmonton Arts Council and Montréal Arts Council, as well as in-kind studio time from Good Women Dance through their Space Share program. Thank you!

Video description: A short title page showing three people in a studio space. One person holds their hand up against the back of a second person, while the third looks on. Title text: ā€œDeaf Dorsality community movement workshop #2.ā€ Cut to a sped-up clip of several people walking backwards across the studio, shot from just over the shoulder of a person waiting with an outstretched hand to gently catch the walker. Each walker then takes over as the catcher for the next person. Cut to a longer, still slightly sped-up clip of several people standing or laying in various positions in an irregular pattern across the floor. A pair of people walk backwards through this ā€˜forest.’ The front person’s vision is limited by their cupped hands so they cannot see anything behind, while the person guiding them uses their hand on their back to indicate what direction they should walk. They navigate successfully and the camera pans to show everyone breaking form and hand waving in applause. End with a still image of two young men standing back to back in sharp shadow, only the outlines of their heads and necks lit. Large text: ā€œDorsal Traces.ā€ Smaller text beneath: ā€œa Deaf duet performance premiering December 2026.ā€ The logos for A Fichu Turning and The Invisible Practice are along the bottom. taken in Shumka Dance Centre by @afichuturning

Calling Deaf & hearing community members! Join us for our third Deaf Dorsality movement workshop on May 25 at 2pm!

In a time where toxic masculinity and identity politics has reached hyper-intensity, we ask: what is disagreement? What is mutual support? Do we want co-existence, or do we want cooperation? Perhaps, Deaf Dorsality is one of the answers to these timely questions.

As part of developing our upcoming brand-new production, Dorsal Traces, we’re hosting community movement and dialogue workshops to share the concept of Deaf Dorsality and explore it through simple, fun, and invigorating movement work.

Facilitated by Ainsley Hillyard & Jan McCarthy. The performers, Connor Yuzwenko-Martin from Edmonton and Cai Glover from Montréal, will also be there!

What do you need to bring?

• Comfy clothes
• Water bottle
• An open mind & heart. Some activities will involve physical contact.

WHEN: Monday May 25, 2pm - 4pm MST
WHERE: Ukrainian Shumka Dancers, 10515 111 St NW, Edmonton

ASL interpretation will be available for non-signers.

Questions before then? Please DM us!
