what does it mean to belong to a book club?

we asked our community, and you gave us some very beautiful answers.

from finding people who understand your obsession with a good book to having a space to share thoughts, discover new stories, and simply feel a little less alone in your reading life, these are the things that make a community feel like home.

so, in their own words, here’s what belonging to the Fifth Wall community means to our readers.

keep reading, keep sharing, keep finding your people 🤍 by @afifthwall_

For International Women’s Day, we asked some of our favourite women to tell us about the female fictional characters they love, and why they’ve stayed with them.

Female protagonists hold a special place in our hearts. Their stories resonate with us, challenge us, and reveal parts of ourselves we didn’t know existed.

Thank you to every incredible woman who contributed to this post, you made it something truly special.

And we’d love to hear from you too. Tell us about a female character who’s dear to you in the comments. 🤍📚💌

If you’re trying to get into reading this year but don’t know where to start, here’s my honest recommendation: start with short story collections.

Maybe you’ve “never really been the biggest reader,” or you’re just not ready to commit to a 400 page novel yet. Short stories are your best entry point. A good short story collection will meet you wherever you are; whether you’re a new reader or a seasoned one trying to get out of a slump.

You can read one story on a Sunday afternoon and feel the satisfaction of finishing a full narrative. You can sit with one voice at a time. You can discover which genres you actually enjoy without the pressure of a long commitment.

If you’re building your reading habit this year, a short story collection is a great place to begin.

Here are my top six short story recommendations in African literature for first-time readers:

• The Thing Around Your Neck by Chimamanda Adichie
• God’s Children Are Little Broken Things by Arinze Ifeakandu
• What It Means When a Man Falls from the Sky by Lesley Nneka Arimah
• Love in Color by Bolu Babalola
• For You, I’d Steal a Goat by Nio Mhlongo
• Hail Mary by Funmi Fetto by @afifthwall_

It’s been so long since I read a book written by a Caucasian author that I genuinely enjoyed.
The major theme in the novel was grief, and the author dissected it perfectly.

My favorite character was Avery. I enjoyed reading her point of view throughout the book.
The character development was well thought out, and weaved perfectly into the lives of the other sisters.
I really loved this book. The writing, the characters, the speech, the plot twists, the ending. A story I’d love to revisit again in the future. by @afifthwall_
