Week 123 of the #stillherestilllife challenge with @efflorescent.studio ! 🌞 It’s been so long since I did one of these.
I was inspired by the lighting in this photo and went for a loose sketchy illustration. I had put a lot of emphasis on technical accuracy in my recent pansy artwork and so it felt freeing to take a more spontaneous approach for this piece.

2. KITE - for @peachtober, hosted by @furrylittlepeach
Very excited to share this one!
This piece was inspired by the swallow bird, which here forms the body of the kite, as well as the bow motifs that have shown up in some of my previous work.
•
I had seen a few ceramic swallows in Portugal this summer and found their shape pleasant and particularly “aerodynamic”. I have a vague memory of having a bird-shaped kite as a kid too (or was it a dragon? And was there ever enough wind to actually get it to fly?).
The swallow also makes me think of freedom, something I strongly value.
•
Have you ever drawn something with so much frenzy and motivation that it felt like it just fell out of your hand?
I spent some time brainstorming this one (some of my early sketches are shared at the end of this carousel); but when it came time to actually draw it, I suddenly had the clearest picture in my head and I found myself in a very satisfying flow state creating the final result.
I love how it turned out! But I also wonder what “stars aligned” to make it feel so clear to me? Have you had pieces that felt like this?

Maybe I need to find a kite again and make it fly.

It’s done!
I left the background a creamy neutral, and finally added in all the mysterious “bowgs” (bugs reimagined with bows). In Poppicot meadows, you never know what you might find.
.
This piece was larger and more detailed than much of my recent work, being 8x10”, and took a lot of energy to complete.
I learned a lot through the process and can’t wait to continue exploring this surreal world in the future ☺️ by @afiore.arts

Latest topic of exploration: perspective.
With an approach that has usually felt more like winging it, I’ve been working on practicing more perspective drawings to get better control over the compositions.
I feel like I have a lot of work that lives inside my head but that won’t come out in a satisfying way until perspective is more second nature to me.
Also I’m finally using this sketchbook as a sketchbook! Loose exploratory images and doodles that I can get out quickly to learn more by doing than thinking… letting my hand guide the next lines and colors intuitively rather than overly planning ahead.
