Recently, I went to Japan, and the one thing I had to get myself was a vintage Seiko. I already had several pieces in mind, mostly vintage Grand Seiko. Unfortunately, while I read every post from @the_seiko_guy, I had neglected to keep up with prices, and found that they, especially no date 44/45GS models, had crept up beyond what I was willing to spend for a graduation watch. With that in mind, I turned to King Seiko.

Of course, reading about Grand Seiko naturally led me to its sister brand, but with my eyes set elsewhere, I hadn’t done the same amount of reading with respect to King Seikos. Thankfully, @b44x_watch pointed me in the direction of a Hungarian blog which condensed additional information regarding the King Seiko lineup, which proved useful when determining which watches were worth paying closer attention to.

After much reading and hunting, I found this: a late model 44-2000 King Seiko – the second model ever produced under the line. They also had several later Grand Seiko models and a re-release of the first King Seiko. The Grand Seikos were in objectively poor condition, while the King Seiko re-release on the other hand was pristine but soulless. Naturally, I gravitated to this vintage King Seiko. Its condition was good, but with noticeable scratches.

While I had done the work when it came to reading about watches, unfortunately I was perhaps underprepared when it came to negotiating for a good price. As expected, I paid the “first-time vintage buyer” tax. It wasn’t exorbitant, but I certainly could have found a better deal if I was willing to buy one online. But alas, this is the price you pay for a vintage Japanese watch in Japan.

Like everything in my life, this wasn’t the watch I was expecting, but it’s the watch I went home with. I’ll probably stick to a two watch Seiko collection for a while, until I’m ready to actually buy a 44/45GS.

Honourable mention to @chrono.path for reminding me that Grand Seikos aren’t rare. Otherwise I probably would’ve jumped on those $5000 Grand Seikos from FireKids lol

Found this shot in my camera from when the security guard wasn’t looking, and I wish my on-the fly composition skills were better. Messed up an almost perfect shot 😫. The first is a cropped version, and the second is the one I actually took.

Lucked out with my hotel room view this time. Will probably post pics of the day view at some point, but I had to get this one out first just because it looks so damn cool. I’m not typically a big skyscraper guy, but I love that they form a pretty cohesive skyline here.

Hope to visit Shanghai more in the future, because five days definitely isn’t enough to properly explore the city. London is already huge to me, and Shanghai is even larger. I haven’t even been to Chongqing or Beijing yet.

Also, this is just a me thing, but I’m incredibly annoyed at myself for not properly wiping my lens before taking this pic. Not sure if it’s visible on Instagram, but there are some pretty bad smudges that I’ve tried my best to get rid of.

Another Heatherwick building just because lol. This time it’s a collab with Fosters. Was really hoping to see the movement of the kinetic facade, but unfortunately it’s apparently tied to the movement within the building and I happened to go on a weekend.

Stopped by 千树/1000 Trees while in Shanghai.

Thought I’d try out using the HDR feature a little more, since Instagram supports it. Essentially the same workflow, but now I have to edit the same picture for both HDR and SDR screens. Not sure what other architectural photographers or even just photographers think about it though. Let me know how it looks on your HDR/SDR screens and if I overdid it! Still tweaking how I work with the feature, so I’m really just fishing for feedback at this point.

I remember being disappointed getting into Newcastle despite having won a scholarship for it. I’d wanted to get into UCL or the AA, but I simply either wasn’t good enough or could afford London. Looking back, I met my favourite people in the world there by chance, and I probably wouldn’t have it any other way. I was lucky for things to not have turned out the way I wanted back then, and so far, it’s been true for most of my favourite moments.

I’m hoping for more happy accidents to come my way in the future. taken in Tynemouth Beach by @afnan_iman

Even after the new vertical feed update, it seems that Instagram is still insisting I stick to 4:5 for portraits, it seems. Wish I could've stuck to the orginals, but it is what it is.

Saw that they published pics of the @sunsurfaloha and @clutchmagazinejapan x @mensfilemagazine launch event recently, so thought I'd share mine too. Was my first time trying to do more of a street photography style, so I’m not too happy with em. Was especially challenging to block out nice silhouettes with most people wearing Hawaiian shirts, but thank god the sun was cooperating on the day.

Took a few more vertical ones, but Instagram won't let me share in the same post without cropping in for some reason.

Got to see a Bagger 293 in real life. Still amazed at the sheer mass and scale of this thing. If you look closely, there are tiny cars and freight containers to give you some context as to just how huge it is. Instead of conventionally mining for coal in tunnels, the Bagger’s bucket wheel excavator literally chews up the ground and spits it back out into tiny hills on the site.

Rather ironically, the horizon is littered with wind turbines as part of Germany’s approach to clean energy, while they consume ever increasing amounts of coal in the wake of Putin holding the continent’s energy hostage. Even 10 years ago, anyone could have told you that shutting down the country’s nuclear power plants would have disastrous consequences for their economy and sustainability efforts, but it seems that it takes a war to rekindle talks of re-nuclearisation.

Also, I’m a bit late, but I’m just testing out the HDR feature in IG. If this looks incredibly flat on your phone, that’s probably why. taken in Tagebau Hambach by @afnan_iman
