Jinn
This is an excerpt from a long conversation I had with my late, dear Mariyakutty ente ummade ummade umma (great grandmother). She had countless stories about jinns and their routines in Ponnani.

This audio clip is taken from an unfinished documentary I had planned to create with her monologue. Unfortunately, I was never able to complete it. Mariyakutty left us a few months ago, and I recently found this audio on my old phone.

Remembering my beloved Mariyakutty.

‘Mother’s Wardrobe’ is a moving documentary that steps into the intimate spaces of womanhood and memory, showing how a single wardrobe becomes a vital anchor for identity and personal history. It says every shelf holds a remnant of a lifetime.

The patterns on my skin are from a different canvas that I failed to paint.

They carry the work of art from all my ages;

year after year, my skin becomes an unforgettable tapestry, reflecting the diversity of our surroundings.

They can conjure up images of the soft curves of a beach,

the lush complexity of a jungle, the flowing grace of a stream,

the limitless expanse of ocean, and the textural grandeur of a desert.

Also, they bear the imprints of our memories, which are engraved like poems in every line and mark.
