This month we are cracking open the Autumn Season with local multi-disciplinary artist @felix.ford.art
Felix has taken over the Shop Front Gallery showcasing a tiny selection of work from her KNITSONIK era.

Casting Off KNITSONIK celebrates a hand-knit body of work as neurodivergent joy and feminist art achievement.

It mourns a way of working no longer available to Felix and marks a starting line for the work that she will create next.

Taking inspiration from her the gridded notebooks she used when creating her knitting charts, Casting Off KNITSONIK lets us into her creative process starting from noticing and being inspiration by the everyday things she sees such as cakes, factories, tins, electronic equipment, buildings, nature e.t.c. To her creating colour palettes from these objects, then turning the images into intricate knitting patterns creating a rich-textured world- which we see both knitted swatches and knitted garments

Our bodies are super knowledgeable - They can tell us so much about the world we live in, how we feel and think about things. This workshop supports us to listen to our bodies and what they might share.

No experience needed. Suitable for all ages 18+ and all bodies. All of you is welcome.

Pop Up Shop with @afri.co.lab located in St Leonards

A fabulous selection of artists and makers showcasing their wonderful handmade creations. You’ll find a selection of my work including plants pots, bags, summer acccesories, alongside work from @ericawordsmith @dorcascreates @maggiescottonline and more.

The shop is open Wednesday - Sunday 11am to 5pm

There is also a great selection on independent shops on this parade, I can highly recommend @darkcircles.stl coffee and music shop. My son devoured his iced latte in about 9 seconds, luckily it was decaf 🤣

This July, whilst our resident dance maestro Darragh O'Leary is away, we are mixing it up with teachers and new ways of moving.

We're kicking things off by swapping the studio for the seafront. @__freedomdance__ meets Afri-Co-Lab for a beachside Silent Disco Dance Fitness session. All abilities welcome, no experience necessary, and summer vibes guaranteed.

✨ Check out local artist Pallavi Devkota's ShopFront Gallery installation: 'Chimera'

Pallavi is our very first open-call ShopFront Gallery artist, and she's transformed the ShopFront Gallery into a fragile prism of ethereal prints.

In 'Chimera', she challenges us to look at our local streets anew — transparent prints layered upon each other and suspended on gossamer-thin threads. Her work blends printmaking, photography, and optics in dreamy, magical ways.

We’re holding a day of restorative play; as a radical act of community care for Global Majority space holders and facilitators - specifically for Global Majority folks whose work or life means they are often holding space, taking responsibility for others and struggling to find space for themselves.

Whether in your professional life as an artist, creative, organiser, activist, therapist, carer, facilitator or you have caring responsibilities outside of your work (this list is not exhaustive). Especially for Global Majority folks living and working in Hastings, Rother, Eastbourne, Newhaven & Lewes area.

It addresses the additional racialised emotional and systematic labour faced by Global Majority folks working and caring in our current communities where racism and micro aggressions are part of everyday life.

It is an invitation to have some respite from that and joyfully and intentionally put something back in your pot. We’ll take care of everything - we’ll do the planning, holding, and organising - all you need to do is book and get to our designated meeting point. There will be drinks and snacks available throughout the day, including a nourishing meal at lunch time.

Across the day, you will be guided through three restorative creative sessions:

🌿 A guided walk through Charleston's beautiful grounds to reconnect with your body.

🎨 A Monoprinting to Music session with local artist and pal @morokoth_fournier

And other delights throughout the day ✨️

The BLACK2HASTINGS Freedom Bus is rolling out again on Saturday 6th June, this time heading to the Great Exhibition Road Festival in South Kensington, London — one of the biggest free festivals of arts, science, creativity and ideas in the country.

We're inviting Black folks, Global Majority communities in East Sussex and their chosen families to join us for a day that's genuinely yours. Afri-Co-Lab takes care of all the organising and planning, so you can focus on the only job that matters: enjoying yourself — freely, confidently and with good company.
