🎲 Guiding you to your next game - DM me your scenario & I’ll find a game!

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED
You read that right - Punchable Games is no more. That doesn’t mean that I’m going away. Quite the opposite. I’ll just be here with a different name.

From now on, this little account will be called A Friend in Games. Why the change? I’m glad you asked.
For some time now, I have wanted a new direction for my account. For my own sake, but also because I want to help more people into our wonderful hobby. So now, I’m going to focus a bit more on making content that guides more than reviews - and content that I’m having fun making.

The review bit is going to be replaced by a more guide based way of recommending games. Think of me as the buddy that you call or text for a game recommendation. “Hey, we’re here in a board game café and have no idea what to play. Help!” or “I’m heading on holiday with my in-laws. Which game should I bring that we all could enjoy?”. That kind of thing.

So expect a lot of lists, goofy reels and all round shenanigans. If you’re in need of a recommendation, please drop by my DM’s - or follow along, which I hope you will.

And as always: Please stop by and say hi. I like it when people say hi. taken in Galten by @afriendingames

I had an allround lovely day today. I went to the annual Designer Retreat at @spilcafeen and got to try out a bunch of prototypes of (hopefully) upcoming games. A stock market game with a dynamic market, a game about fighting robots, a game about being a bodyguard for a VIP and one that combines cooperative trick taking with tile laying.

The Danish design scene is doing very well!

🕌 Cubyria: Architects of a Lost City 🕌
You have been appointed as architect on the castle of Cubyria, run by a mad vizier. Now you - and up to four other players - have to try and please the vizier by completing his castle, complete with staircases, balconies, hallways and torture chambers. Things that any modern castle should have. That is the premise of Cubyria: Architects of a Lost City by @cubyriagames.

Cubyria is basically semi-cooperative 3D Tetris. You take turns playing cards from your hand that match rooms in the supply. You then place this building, adhering to the building rule: It has to be connected to another room via a door or staircase. These rooms then score a basic point value multiplied by the floor their on and with a few bonuses added in, if you connect it to a room with the same affinity, or if the room allows you to fulfill a “whimsy card”. Those are bonus goals that you try to complete, because they score you double of all the points that round. You do this over a series of turns until all of the cards have been drawn. The person with the most points is the winner!

Honestly? This game is pretty darn good. There’s something so satisfying about seeing the castle coming to life in front of you and scoring a ton of points in the process. Initially, I was a little intimidated by the scoring system, but once you get acquainted with both that and the building rules, the games zips by. And, if you want to play it with beginners or children, there’s an introductory game that you can play with kids as young as 8. Still a ways to go for my daughter of 1,5 years, but she was very fascinated with the components 😅

It’s clear that Cubyria is a work of love. Even though the game that I’ve played is “just” a prototype, it’s obvious that this game has been made with the goal in mind that its players should be having fun. And that is pretty much all you can ask of in a game. If you’re into Tetris, combos and getting in the way of your opponents, I highly encourage you to check this out. It launches on Kickstarter on October 20th - and it’ll be at @spiel_messe!

Spiel countdown week (and a bit)!
In a little over a week, I’m heading to @spiel_messe for the fourth time in a row, and this year, things are going to be a little different for me. This is because I’ll be going there on my own and for one day only. So my mission this year is to try and see if you can get the full Spiel experience (or come close) in just one day.

I hope you’ll follow along for the ride here on instagram, and if you’re heading to Spiel, please say hi if you see me in the halls. I do so like it when people say hi.

The next post in my Spiel series will be an overview of the games that I have preordered and definitely will be picking up at the show. by @afriendingames

🌊 Legacy of Yu 🌊
Last week, I finished my first play of Legacy of Yu and it was one of the most pleasant gaming surprises I’ve had this year. So let me tell you a little about it.

Legacy of Yu is a campaign game, meaning that you’ll be adding and removing components as you go along, according to the story. Each game you play will end in a loss or a win - as games have a tendency to do - and whether you win or lose will influence what you carry over to the next game. Typically, a loss means that you’ll gain some kind of a boost for your next game. At its core, Yu is a game about managing resources. Each round you draw a hand of villager cards that give you resources. These resources can be spent building the canal, recruiting new villagers, building huts and defeating barbarians. You win if you build all segments of the canal without being overrun by barbarians or flooded by the river.

Legacy of Yu is the perfect solo game for me. The rules and mechanisms are easy to internalize, the theme is well worked into the game, and it can be played in around an hour. This is one of those games that are staying on my shelf so I can cherish the memories that I share with it.

Got Five!
A pretty special game arrived the other day. It’s called Got Five, and it’s a sort of social party game where you have to guess the numbers on these tiles that are facing away from you. The game itself is fun, but that’s not why it’s so special to me.

It is because I did the Danish translation for it, and so it’s my first contribution to the world of board gaming. That’s pretty wild for me!

Anyway, shameless self plug over - have a lovely Saturday!

Thank you to @asmodee_nordics for both letting me translate it and sending me a copy.

🚀 Excursions 🚀
Last year, Kinson Key made quite a splash with Galactic Cruise, a game about sending tourists into space. It was big, its actions were networks based, it was with art by @ianotooledesign - all things that made it a deserved hit for the first time publishers. Now, they’re back with Excursions - a lighter, faster and more accessible entry into the Galactic Cruisiverse. Yes, I stand by calling it that. Excursions hits Kickstarter today, so go check it out!

In Excursions, you are - like in its big brother - sending tourists into space. This is done by a simultaneous action selection much like we know from Earth, where one player selects an action and then everyone has to do the same action. Think of it as “Simon says” in board game form. These actions can be upgrading your ship, adding new destinations to your trips, building developments and launching ships. When you select an action as the active player, you also get a bonus, decided by the ever rotating wheel in the middle of the board. You then race the other players - it plays 1-6 - to 50 points and, you guessed it, the person with the most points wins.

I like Galactic Cruise - I like it a lot. Unfortunately, it falls into the category of games that are hard to get to the table. It’s big, it’s hard to teach and it takes a long time to play. With Excursions, I get to experience the thrill of the theme from GC while being able to play a game in an hour or so. This is a game that, while I won’t put in front of anybody, I’ll be happy to bring to game night - even on a week day. The quicker gameplay (and game time) suits the theme very well and you still get the feeling of firing off a big machine when you launch the perfect cruise into space. Pair that with Ian O’Toole’s magnificent artwork and a the same production quality that made Galactic Cruise pop, and you have a potential hit on the table.

The nice people at @kinsonkeygames sent me this prototype to try out. Please note that the prototype contains a mix of deluxe and retail edition components. by @afriendingames

👁️ Mystery Monday: Eyes 👁️
Hey hey, it’s Monday again and time for #mysterymonday🎲! @the_dragons_board chose “Eyes” as today’s theme, and I went for a bit of a glowing eyes special as a run-in spooky season.

Do you recognize these lovely…erm…characters from somewhere?

Folded Space appreciation post
I do a lot of posts about board games, as I’m sure you’ve noticed. Posts, where I applaud designers, developers and publishers, and every one of those applauses are well deserved. But there’s a hero that goes unsung too often. @folded_space. The kind of hero that doesn’t wear a cape, but produce wonders in a material called Evacore. It’s a memory foam that’s mostly made from recycled plastic, but that’s not the point.

The point is that the good people at Folded Space make inserts where there are none. That help tokens, meeples, dice and boards get organized in our boxes. These inserts can be assembled with nothing but regular glue and are usually quite quick and fun to put together. They help with setup and teardown times, they can be used as player trays during games and they are custom made to fit the box without added weight or lid lift. I cannot say enough nice things about them.

And yes, I have received review copies of Folded Space inserts. But I have bought many more. So this post is just to let everyone with a desire for better organized board games know that this is the way. That is all.
