From Senegal to the world 🇸🇳🌍

@afrobabiesn and @afrobabiesmovement was featured on @cnnstyle under African Voices, with a live segment on CNN Chief International Anchor @camanpour show. I am still trying to find the words.

I learned to braid at my mother’s kitchen table in Thiès.
I never imagined a day like this. Being self-taught and seeing my work on a stage like this is overwhelming in the most beautiful way.

Afro Babies started as a name between creative friends in Dakar, all of us experimenting together. It has grown into a movement to bring African women back to our natural hair, our texture, our roots. A reminder that what grows out of our heads is already beautiful, already enough, already ours. That our coils deserve the same artistry, the same ambition, the same global stage as any other texture in the world. 👑

A special thank you to @cnnstyle’s « African Voices » for the platform, and to journalist @maya.baylis for telling the Afro Babies story with so much heart.

Dewenati from Dakar 🤲🏿🤍
Dewenati, in Wolof, is not simply “happy Eid.”
It means maybe we will meet again next year.
A prayer shaped by uncertainty, by the hope of reunion, and by the belief that what is ahead of us can be better than what we have known.

I leave this Ramadan more aware of Allah and more sincere in my intentions, asking God to fix my heart before He fixes my life, to heal what I have carried in silence, to protect my community whether they are here or have returned to Him, and to write me among the forgiven and the accepted.

Standing before the water,
I am reminded of what we have always known,
and what my ancestors often remind me.
Water holds memory.
And what it remembers is not only ours.

This Ramadan came in the midst of war, occupation, and displacement, where ordinary people continue to pay the price for power struggles that yield only more violence and more loss.

It came as Palestinians endure relentless genocide, Congolese face generations of extraction, Sudanese families are displaced in the millions, Haitians navigate crisis, Cubans live under pressure, Syrians carry immense grief, Iran and Lebanon move through repression, and oppressed people in the United States and across the WORLD continue to be denied dignity, including here in Senegal, where students and the marginalized continue to fight for human dignity.

For many, Ramadan was beyond mere light or gathering. It was du’a (prayer) as survival,
something so real for me.

When everything else is taken, du’a becomes the last refuge and, at times, the only weapon against oppression.

Dewenati, then, is not a greeting.
It is a question and a responsibility.
Who will we be if we are granted the mercy to meet again? Will we return having stood for the oppressed and committed ourselves to a justice that is lived, where dignity is not conditional?

Belief and sincerity are not passive,
but rather catalysts.
Allah is with those who are steadfast.
Dewenati. May we meet again, and may we return more aligned, more accountable, and more devoted to justice than we are today.

The Olympic flame has arrived.
And in so many ways, so have I. 🔥🇸🇳💫

My prayer has always been to find myself doing the right work, with the right people, in the right place, at the right time. This felt like one of those moments.

Standing on African soil, watching women carry the Olympic flame and young people take their place at the center of history, I couldn’t help but think about all the ways life has brought me here.

Not just to witness this moment, but to be part of the work and team behind the storytelling of it all.

Here, in Senegal. On the continent. At home.

I’m incredibly proud to officially share that I’ve joined @JOJDakar2026 leadership as part of the Communications team, helping shape the story of the first-ever @olympics games to be held on African soil. 🌍

Over the past decade, storytelling has taken me around the world—from working with global brands through my agency to serving youth of the diaspora as a school leader. Looking back, it feels like every chapter was quietly preparing me for this one.

Who could have imagined that a dream I had in 2016 to find a long-lost parent would one day lead me here not only to find home, but to help tell Africa’s story, from Africa itself, during a moment the world will never forget.

Everything that has guided my life’s work—investing in young people, telling meaningful stories, and contributing to Africa’s future has come together in a role that feels deeply purposeful.

Here’s to the final 100 days until history is made in Dakar.
What an honor it is to help shape its story. 🇸🇳✨

The @olympics flame has arrived in Dakar, Sénégal, for the first time ever on African soil.

Africa is the origin of humanity.
Women are the origin of life.
Youth is where both legacies are carried forward.

The @jojdakar2026 Marche des Linguères was a testimony — when a flame this significant arrives on our continent for the first time, it belongs first in the hands of the women who carry this land’s story forward.

Over the next several weeks it will travel across the entire country, from the cities through the villages, so that every corner of Sénégal and every person who calls it home can witness it.

To witness this moment, to help shape its story as it unfolds across my home country, is something I will carry for the rest of my life.

For the women. For the youth. For Sénégal. For Africa.

Sixty-six years ago, Senegal was declared independent, but independence has never been a finished story. We must never forget those, past and present, who have given their lives in the name of it, because their sacrifice is what makes this day real and what gives it weight.

I carry a deep and unwavering pride for Senegal, for our culture, our people, and the way we move through the world, but that pride does not absolve us from asking more of ourselves.

If the fight for dignity, for voice, and for a just future is still ongoing, then independence cannot exist only as history. It remains a living question, and one we are still responsible for answering.

And we must also remember that our struggles here are not isolated. They are connected to broader fights for justice across the continent and around the world. What happens here is tied to what is unfolding elsewhere, and our voices, our work, and our art carry a responsibility to stand in solidarity with those whose liberation is bound up with our own.

May our leaders, and all of us as people of this country, never forget our responsibility to our youth, our citizens, and our elders as we collectively build toward and define what true liberation and independence must be.
