Meet Lara Reffat (@larareffat), an Egyptian journalist and a Borderless Africa Feminist Writing Fellow.

Lara works across civil society organizations, Pan-African movements, and feminist NGOs, where she helps shape narratives that reflect people's lives with meaning, dignity, and purpose.

As an Egyptian, Lara speaks about the complex relationship many Egyptians have with the rest of Africa. She reflects on how some distance themselves from the shared Pan-African struggles and histories that connect the continent.

She also highlights an often-overlooked reality: while movement across Africa can be challenging for everyone, women face additional barriers. Unsafe travel conditions, the risk of gender-based violence, and the silence surrounding these experiences make mobility even more difficult. Yet these challenges are rarely centered in conversations about a borderless Africa.

For Lara, a truly borderless Africa must include safe and accessible movement for women, with their experiences and concerns fully recognized and addressed.

Her dream is an Africa where no one has to worry about crossing borders to visit, learn from, and connect with fellow Africans; an Africa where we see ourselves as one community, able to move, communicate, and thrive together.

🎥 Watch Lara's story and share your vision of a borderless Africa. @afro_borderless

Free Movement Must Work For People #BorderlessAfrica
Did you know the African Union adopted the Protocol on Free Movement of Persons back on 29 January 2018?

While the protocol sets out a vision for the Right of Entry, Right of Residence, and Right of Establishment, a policy document alone does not automatically erase every border barrier.

For students, traders, workers, families, and border communities, free movement is about real life; shaping access to education, business, and livelihoods across Africa.

Africans Rising is pushing from commitment to action through the Borderless Africa campaign.

We are calling on African governments for:

Ratification & implementation of AU frameworks.
Stronger political commitment and inter-state cooperation.
Border policies that honor human dignity and lived realities.

📢 Stand with us for a truly connected continent!

#BorderlessThursday Recap | Global Financial Architecture & Reparations

What happens when we look beyond debt figures and economic reports to see how they affect people's lives?

This week's Borderless Africa Feminist Writing Fellowship session explored debt, reparations, narrative sovereignty, and economic justice through a feminist lens.

💬 "The extraction has not moved from our resources. It has extended to our brains, our expertise, and all of that." - Felicity Asibi Akwa

Participants reflected on how systems of extraction continue to evolve and asked what it takes to recover our minds, knowledge, and agency.

💬 "The responsibility to guarantee non-repetition is not on us. We are the rights holders." - Eunice Odhiambo

The discussion emphasized the importance of documenting community histories, preserving oral testimonies, and taking conversations on reparations beyond elite spaces into communities.

💬 "We talk about debt through GDP, percentages, and repayments. We do not talk about missing medicines." - Brenda Wanjiru

A powerful reminder that economic policies must be measured by their impact on people's lives, not just by numbers on paper.

💬 "Trade rules are often decided far from the women whose incomes depend on them." - Maria Djigo

Cross-border women traders continue to bear the hidden costs of restrictive policies, delays, and unequal economic systems.

💬 "Follow the money, but also follow the unpaid work. Who quantifies that labour?" - Anne Rose

From unpaid care work to narrative sovereignty, participants examined how women absorb the hidden costs of austerity and inequality.

The session concluded with a powerful reminder:

"Borderless Africa must also be a reparative Africa. Freedom of movement without economic justice leaves the structures of inequality intact." - Anne Rose

Brenda Wanjiru | Kenya 🇰🇪

Through her work in public health and conflict research, Brenda Wanjiru is committed to documenting the realities that statistics and legal frameworks often fail to capture. She speaks about recording testimonies, transcribing stories, and bringing to light the human experiences hidden behind court proceedings on genocide, war crimes, and collective trauma.

For Brenda, the most important stories are often found in the spaces between official records: the silence, the laughter, the grief, and the resilience of people living through conflict. Her work explores the long-term health impacts of war, particularly the gaps left unaddressed in public health systems and the experiences of children affected by conflict, including former child soldiers navigating the journey back into community life.

A recurring theme in Brenda's reflection is inclusion and the need to overcome "kikwazo", the barriers that prevent people from reaching their full potential. She examines how borders shape identity, movement, and belonging, drawing from her own experience traveling from East Africa to Mozambique, where she encountered both deep cultural connections and striking divisions created by colonial boundaries.

With her characteristic warmth and humor, Brenda asks a simple but profound question: Have Africans lost their romance?

To her, a truly Borderless Africa is one where people can freely discover each other's cultures through food, friendship, language, fashion, and love. It is an Africa where building a life, pursuing opportunities, or even starting a family across borders is not limited by lines drawn on a map.

And on a lighter note, Brenda has a special wish: to collect football jerseys from across the continent.

Do you have a football jersey from your country? Let us know. We might just help get it to her.

A great honour to be moderating this session at Afrotalks Nairobi #afrotalks2026.

Tomorrow, I’ll be joining Bright Tenbil and Vanessa Amolo to co-moderate the “The Africa We Want” Roundtable Open Forum at Afro Talks Nairobi 2026.

But what does the Africa we want actually look like? And who gets to decide?

An Africa rich in resources, yet where many of its people struggle to control their economic futures. A continent with deep cultural connections, yet divided by borders that make movement, trade and belonging difficult. A continent whose stories, knowledge and heritage have too often been defined, extracted or owned by others.

These are questions we must confront as we talk about African sovereignty, reparations, ownership and the future of continental integration.

Looking forward to a conversation beyond the declarations to what’s Africa’s real potential? We shall interrogate the power structures, choices and actions required to realise it.

We will together decide what we must reclaim, what we must change, and what we must build together. Care to join us?

Because the Africa we want cannot remain an aspiration. It must become a reality that ordinary Africans can experience in their everyday lives. Tupatane Westlands, Trademark Hotel, Westlands.

FEMINIST FELLOWS SPOTLIGHT | ANNA MITI 🇿🇼

What does it mean to belong to a continent when borders can deny you that very belonging?

For Anna Miti, a Zimbabwean feminist communications practitioner, journalist and writer, this question is personal. With a Zambian father and Malawian mother, Anna experienced statelessness— born in a country where a lived experience grounds her vision for a Borderless Africa.

Her work spans women’s rights, sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), and information and knowledge management. She believes in the power of narratives to overcome adversity and in making knowledge accessible, especially to women at the grassroots. That means breaking down complex language, including scientific information, into content people can understand and use.

For Anna, media literacy is also essential to building a feminist Africa—one where women can question the information they encounter, make informed decisions and participate meaningfully in society.

Her leadership in the Global South Coalition for Dignified Menstruation reflects this commitment to gender justice and the dignity of women and girls.

Anna’s story reminds us that borders are not merely lines on a map. They can determine access, recognition and the right to belong.

A Borderless Africa must be one where borders serve people, not exclude them; where knowledge empowers women, and where every African can claim their dignity and belonging.

When the Homeland Becomes a Question: Sudanese Migration, Colonial Borders, and a Belonging That Refuses to Wait - Africans Rising

There is a particular kind of grief that comes with leaving your homeland. But there is another grief, less spoken of the one that arrives when you realize you no longer have a homeland to return to, and yet you must find a way to belong somewhere else. For thousands of Sudanese who fled the war that erupted in April 2023, this grief has become a daily companion.

Mariam Djigo — Senegal

“Journalism is my passion, my way of giving voice to the voiceless and strengthening democracy.” @mariame_djigo, Feminist for Borderless Africa Writing Fellow from Senegal.

From Dakar to the Mauritania border, Mariam’s story shows how borders limit women’s freedom to travel, study, and work. Despite living just kilometers away, she must navigate paperwork and payments to cross with her mother.

Her vision: a borderless Africa where women move freely, dignity is upheld, and democracy thrives. Africans Rising

Imagine a young Ugandan who gets a job offer in Ghana but has to navigate visa requirements before packing their bags. A Ugandan trader trying to grow her business across the border. A student who dreams of studying in another African country but cannot afford the cost of getting there.

Different people. Different dreams. One continent, yet too many barriers.

This Borderless Thursday, we emphasize that African integration must mean more than agreements signed in meeting rooms. It must mean that our people can move, learn, work, trade and build lives across Africa with dignity.

The vision exists. What we need now is action.

What would a borderless Africa make possible for you?

Add your voice. Sign the People's Petition for #BorderlessAfrica and call on African governments to make free movement a reality.

Narrative Sovereignty and Feminist Futures in a Borderless Africa

Whose stories are we telling? Whose voices are we amplifying? And whose experiences remain erased from the African story?

The Borderless Africa Feminist Writing Fellowship by @afro_borderless is laying the groundwork for understanding African consciousness through a feminist lens. It explores how narratives shape power, whose perspectives are legitimised, and how patriarchal storytelling continues to exclude African women’s experiences in health, food systems, spirituality, trade and everyday life.

The fellows revisit the feminist pioneers of precolonial Africa; the Pan-African femininjas whose courage, leadership and resistance challenged patriarchy and colonialism, yet whose contributions remain largely unrecognised in mainstream historical narratives.

Narrative sovereignty means reclaiming our memory, challenging erasure and restoring African women to the centre of our collective history.

It also means asking who is missing from the conversation and creating space for women whose voices have been silenced, marginalised or denied the opportunity to tell their own stories.

Across Africa, borders shape women's experiences of movement, trade, relationships and spiritual connection. For women engaged in cross-border trade, restrictions often come with heightened vulnerability to harassment, exploitation and sexual abuse. These realities remain underrepresented in conversations about free movement and African integration.

A truly borderless Africa must confront not only the physical barriers that divide us, but also the patriarchal structures that restrict women's freedom, dignity and participation.

When African feminists tell our stories, they challenge distorted histories, expose silences and bring neglected experiences into public consciousness. They help us understand where we come from, confront the structures that hold us back and imagine a future in which every African woman can move, speak, belong and lead.

We cannot reclaim Africa's story while leaving African women out of it.

Today, we spend time at the 5th Kenya Indigenous Seed, Culture and Food Harvest Fair at Karisa Maitha Grounds in Kilifi, Kenya.

Beyond celebrating our indigenous seeds, traditional foods and cultural heritage, it serves as a reminder that reparative justice must also address the cultural and ecological harm caused by colonialism, including the disruption of African food systems and the devaluation of indigenous knowledge.

Protecting indigenous seeds, reclaiming traditional food practices and preserving ancestral knowledge are part of restoring communities’ relationships with land, culture and self-determination. These practices carry generations of knowledge about cultivation, nutrition, biodiversity and collective wellbeing.

Reparations means going beyond what was taken in the past. They are also about restoring what communities need to sustain themselves and pass on to future generations.

African seeds carry a rich heritage. Traditional foods connect communities to their ancestors. Indigenous knowledge is a legacy worth protecting.

Cultural reparations are an essential part of the broader struggle for reparative justice.

Abla Salih Abdalla — Sudan 🇸🇩

From the front lines of feminist research, Abla speaks about women’s experiences of war, ASAL mediation, traditional amnesty, and the struggles of life across borders.

She reflects on how restrictions between Sudan, Egypt, Chad, South Sudan, and Uganda shape women’s lives, and how solidarity can break those barriers.

Through the Borderless Africa Feminist Writing Fellowship, Abla deepens her fight against colonialism and envisions a continent where dignity and peace belong to all Africans.
